Is it just me or is the group being inundated with odd advertising type postings? Even blocking sender won't work since they change their email addresses at whim. Any other options to sweep the vermin out the door?
I use Outlook Express for my news reader but on rare occasions, I use Google and boy, do they stick out like a sore thumb in Google Groups! Gee-gads!
ps - I do skip over them; I don't ever read them but they are still annoying.

Alice, I just don't know which but it is very seldom that an advertising message shows up here; not in my mail or here on the newsgroup. Don't know whether to give credit to the cable company's spam blocker, the AVG thing or my blocked sender's list. We may find out one day how many is too many on the blocked sender capacity but I routinely block anybody annoying. You have been warned. =) Polly

It does seem like there have been more lately, though I think it seems to go in streaks. Maybe just too much free time during spring break? I've noticed a lot of them come from gmail accounts, and I considered filtering out anything that came from gmail, but some of our regulars use gmail, so decided it was easier just to go to the next post when I hit one of the oddballs.

Seems like for a couple years there were only a couple and then all of a sudden we were getting inundated with them.I can recognize them by the addresses. After awhile one gets familiar with all you quilty ladies out there in e land.

This isn't the only group being inundated with the advertising. I am on another group, and they are having the same thing there. That group is actually much worse than this one.

There have been a few odd messages lately Alice. I have noticed because we had a computer 'crash' and lot the lot. Now I have to find my favourites again and block all the nasties.

Trouble is to Block Sender on my OE you have to open them 1st I think. I have the largest Block Senders list.!!
We have no way to prevent them, AFAIK. We aren't a moderated group. Yes they are mildly annoying, but only because they don't belong here. No problem to skip them. Roberta in D

Alice, Well, I haven't had the problem in the NG, but have had an upswing of spamm in mail. Remember, it is Spring Break for lots of 'dear students' so that could be a factor. Idle minds and all that.
There are lots of spring breakers here on Mississippi's Gulf Coast doing major good things. We had to drive across the coast this morning to put a friend 'in' a plane. We avoid seeing the coast as much as possible. The sights are still heart-breaking. Anyhow. Many high school, college and church groups are South for their spring break to build, clean, repair and patch the ever-present destruction of Katrina. Oh my. Those are such fine young people. Something we've never seen before - there's a beautifully restored old church on the Biloxi beach. It's standing amidst a lot of ugliness. The sign on the front says "OPEN". Polly
Polly: Thank you for reminding us that lots of the Spring Break groups are up to VERY GOOD, including some from my parish.
Be certain, Pat, that every chance you get, you assure these precious volunteers how profoundly grateful we are. Maybe they don't have any engineering skills, maybe they can't even drive a nail straight. Just knowing that somebody knows and cares is enough. A hug is without measure. We are not victims. We are survivors and gratefully, not ever, ever alone. Those struggling are not looking for a handout. A hand-up. Yes. Hug them for all of us, Polly
