Is it just me or....

does anyone else have issues with that first cut into a new length of fabric?

I managed to score some awesome quilt fabric from a garage sale last summer, kind of a batik looking stuff, and just cant seem to get myself to actually cut into it.

I was thrilled when I found it! This lady was a quilter who decided it wasn't her thing anymore and sold off meters and meters of fabric for cheap cheap cheap! I bought 4 pieces, one was as big as 10 meters (Halloween eyeballs) for $8.00!! the others were 3 and 4 and 6 meters for $2 and $5 and $7.(the kinda batik looking stuff)

Anyway, I just cant see my way to cutting into these lengths! I have anxiety when I think of it! I know that it will be just fine when I get started, it is just that first cut....

Am I just too weird?

You aren't weird at all......I have fabric I have not cut.............but I know what helps me. I pull a thread and square up both ends......after washing the fabric thoroughly. It seems to me that getting it "ready to cut" helps me start.

not anymore after 2 years of making quilts for a magazine and cutting into beautiful fabrics I have kind of gotten used to it and now I find ripping off the selvage to be quite soothing hehehe

You are in good company. I have managed to get over it by telling myself this: I can have a piece of flat fabric, or I can have something I make. The fabric has lots of potential, but it will never be anything more important than a piece of fabric unless I cut it first. It sure would be a shame if I never made anything out of it. Hell, I can't even cut up a fat quarter if I really love it.

Big peices I can cut very easily. It's the FQs I can't seem to cut. I guess I should buy only BIG pieces!

Send the pieces you cannot bear to cut to me. I will make the sacrifice and do the deed for you. What are friends for? Polly

Not weird. We probably all have pieces we feel for in that way. (Mine is turquoise with a floral design, a gift from DD1 when she lived in Bangkok.) See if you can use one for a backing. totally justifies keeping it in one big piece, and then you get to use the leftovers. Roberta in D

THAT was from Miz Polly? I'll have to backtrack and see 'whom' I thought sent it. Surely not OUR Miz Polly. No way, no how.

Maybe Frood, cause she is getting a bit better but surely NOT our Miz Polly. Musta been into the overripe Iced Tea
