OT; Extreme makeover

Actually, I preferred your explanation as it was factual and to-the-point. But I enjoyed reading the article, too. Thanks again, John.

errr... I *think* I will stick with my nice safe back-pedal bike (i.e.. it breaks when you pedal backwards) handbrake bikes are dangerous in my book - every time I back pedal to break it just keeps on moving so the only way I can remember to stop is by jumping off. This invariably scares the car driver into thinking they hit me, especially when I get cut in the process of jumping off.

but if I didn't have the kids with me welll.. since fixed gear bike "break"by pedalling backwards I might actually be safe...

I have 2 copies in my personal library. One to read and one to keep in the time vault in case something happens to the "reader".It is my all time favorite bicycle related book I reread it 2 or 3 times a year. It is amazing the changes that have happened to this country between the time that he took that ride and today. I grew up in Seattle and messed about in the Pacific Northwest before heading out to parts unknown when I was 18 years.

Thanks for rem> >

Sunny is a long time nick name. I won't tell you my legal first name, nothing wrong with it but I do share it with approximately one of every three women born in the late 1950s. There are so many of us, you couldn't turn around without stepping on one of us. Asa result, we all got nick names. And my maiden name was Weathers. LOL. At some point, Sunny stuck and so it remains. I have considered changing it legally, but I'm lazy. I have read that if you consistently are "nick named" that you were misnamed at birth. That's me, I think. I was given my first nickname by my dad at the age of a couple of weeks. And I've always had nicknames.

So there is the whole long and boring story, related at 2:44 a.m. on a toss-n-turn night when nothing in my house is sleeping soundly. Lordy I think the weather is headed down the tubes again, LOL.

Interesting about nicknames/wrong names. I don't have a nickname, but ever since I can remember, when people call me by the wrong name, they call me Wendy.

Makes you wonder how doesn't it?

I ususally get, in order, Debbie, Donna and more recently Dianne. Well at least they start with "D" :-) It has only taken my sil 25 years to spell it correctly, now she has to learn that DS's name ends in 'bi' not 'bby' Dee in Oz

... whose name is really Denise

My rellos over in Poland used to call me Sah-ra as they couldn't for some reason say Sharon. Now I'm getting Sara from the crossing guard at work intermingled with Girly.

Same with me. I get called Elaine when people get it wrong!

Well, my parents couldn't make up their minds when I was named. So they gave me a name and called me another. Over the years I have learned to answer to my given name - but my friends and family call me Bonne ;-) I have often thought that the other name could handle all problems (legal and medical) and Bonnie could have all the fun!

I have been wrongly called Brenda by many folks over the last 30 years, and at least there is a similar sound to that name so I can see how someone might mis-hear my name and use Brenda instead.

However, there is one lady who has been calling me Judy for over 10 years. It would not be nearly so bad except whenever she sees you across any distance she feels she must yell your name until you notice her and reply, and then when she talks to you she ends every sentence and question with your name. I've tried telling her my real name several times, but bless her soul, she just can't get the name Judy out of her head. So to this one person, like it or not, I am now and ever shall be Judy.

My family nickname has always been Jess I have taken to using it a lot when I still worked as I just got fed up being called the wrong name (and one that make s my hair stand on end) Jessica, I have also been called jessemy, jessmine, jasmina, jessmine, jasmine and any other variation you might think up so I gave up and introduced myself as jess then people started calling me yes, Jessie and a couple more variations on that theme. only one person I know gets away with jessy - she means well and is a friend and can't remember my by any other name so I have given up on her getting it right

There is a gal at my guild named Mary. I always want to call her Ruth. She laughs at me and says I am welcome to call her anything. She is a pretty cool old gal. Thank goodness for name badges.

The last 4 girls in my family all have nicknames that are pretty much all my dad and much of the family uses. It makes things really tough on people to keep track of odd names and then nicknames too. I have somewhat of an identity problem with some of the extended family. I'm never sure who calls me what. I do think of myself around family as my nickname but it seems to be less used as the years go by. One sister uses her nickname as her legal name. I have no clue but I imagine she is creating a nightmare for herself as time goes on.

With a name like Taria you just get used to your name being said wrong and once folks get it in their mind it is tough to go back. Taria

Dad's will do that to ya. When my Dad first saw me he said "Isn't she a bonny lass". That's been my nickname ever since.

Kate, reading your message was akin to watching a cat stumble. It doesn't happen often, but very funny when it does. Thanks for the laugh, Dearie. I do hope you can get your keyboard working correctly again so you can return to your usual dignified and proper netiquette self. Debra in VA See my quilts at

Well, with a name like Mary, there's no problem with pronunciation BUT there's also no room for a nickname! I mean, having Mary shortened to Mare as a nickname *never* did thrill me -- LOL! I was VERY happy when I was married to my first spousal eunuch who was Mexican-American. I instantly became Tia Mary. I have have been divorced from the first spouse for almost 37 years but I am still called Tia Mary and have been called that for the last 41 years ago! All of my friends back in Lizard Land just call me Tia and I guess that's my nickname. I will have to say that when I first got to the newsgroups I was surprised by all the people named TIA who were asking questions about something -- LOLOL! CiaoMeow >^;;^<

The single most "wrong name" for Melissa I get is Michelle. My friend Sharon says hers is "Susan".

I get it so often I just answer to it and rarely correct it in most situations.
