How safe is it to put your real name and address in a moderated yahoo group database? Dozens are in the one I'm considering, but it feels odd to me to do that. What would you do?

I do it. If someone wants your address, there are lots of ways to find it on the internet.
I've got mine in several and have had no problems. Maybe I'm just not as paranoid as some ---not meant for you, Karen. Gen
Mine is in several groups. A person's address is very easy to find on the internet and in criss cross directories. I have never been concerned about it.

I'm in, I think, four of them and have never had a problem resulting from it.

Do not do it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I know a woman who has been net stalked and threatened because a very sick individual took exception to something she posted. Or at least that's what she thinks. The Police cannot and will not get involved. Stay anonymous for your own safety.
Not if you not use your own real name. Marie is not my real name. Do not use your real name on the Internet.
I've joined with my real name for years. Used my address too. Never had a problem.

The only database I put my name into in Yahoo is the one for people from this group going to Houston. I just don't trust that spammers can't join long enough to get those bits of information.
depends very much on the group, I've not done it myself, but I have shared my address with people who I've only met on yahoogroups. We did it the same way you do with the directory on here, if the entry to the yahoogroup was as controlled as entry to the directory is, then I probably would share my address that way.

On a moderated group it's pretty safe. I have my real name and addy on a yahoo group database in a moderated group. Not a single problem. Of course we've had several meet ups and lots of us know each other anyway and know each other's real names and addys.
I've had no problem with my real name in Yahoo groups.
I was stalked by a live person who followed me home from my morning run in the park across the street. He was supposed to be in jail until May but got released December 23 for some reason. I still have to carry around the copy of the restraining order.
Also had lots of problems with my real phone number and "good" email address listed in the local quilting guild's directory. Got some real potty-mouth voicemails from the 80-year-old set that didn't like the idea that I sent the guild's newsletter via email for those who preferred getting it that way.
So why wouldn't I trust a moderated Yahoo group. . . real life has been much more threatening.

Marie,
I've had my real name with email address and phone number on my Project Linus chapter website for quite a few years. Never had a problem. How else would people contact me if they wanted info about our chapter if I didn't have my name and email address available to them?

Karen,
I am in several groups, moderated of course, and have never had a problem.
I agree with Mary, if they want it there are ways to find it.

You are taking a real chance doing that. A P.O. Box is much safer. The woman I know never had a problem for years either. Then this crazy person started to harass her and post dreadful things about her, including her name, address and phone number. The last time I spoke to her she said she was so afraid she was moving into town where there are more people around and he can't find her. She is getting an unlisted number and using a P.O. Box. She also said if he finds her again she is legally changing her name and moved to another city about 25 miles away. Stalkers are dreadful people to have in your life. There is no way to know if they'll keep it on the Internet or take it to real life off-line.
Unless the members of the group are going to be mailing each other I wouldn't list a full addy. I only list VA as my address, just like I do here, so I could be anywhere in the state. Debra in VA See my quilts at:
When in doubt, I make up a name and address- or just use my first name and maiden name. If you ever need to use your real name and address (like for a swap) it's easy enough to tell whomever needs the info what your 'correct' name and address is and explain the made-up info. Why take a chance? You are too precious to us to do that! ;-)
