OT: GeoBear Update

Hi Guys, I have had a tremendous response from people at RCTN and RCTQ. I now have six hosts the other side of the pond and six (counting my DSis) this side of the pond! I can't thank all of you enough for agreeing to help out with this project. I'll be sending an e-mail to everyone who has volunteered but wanted to share the info with others here who are interested but not able to host GeoBear. The teacher has asked those who host GeoBear to send the class a post card if possible letting them know where he currently is. A journal will accompany him on his travels and each host is asked to add a photo of GeoBear in a place that is descriptive of the area -- maybe next to a sign with the name of the town on it, etc. I want my DSis (Betsy, in TX) to be the last one to have him and she will take his photo with the Texas wildflowers if they are in bloom at that time. I hope to take him to the Forsyth Co. courthouse and take his picture there. I already have taken his photo sitting on the big pumpkin that is displayed in my front yard. GeoBear needs to be back home at the school in Lizard Land by 10 May

2010. This way all the kids can see where he has been and what he has done. They also have time to find the different locales on the map which is the main purpose of the project. Raechel's GeoBear is not the only one being sent around so that class should get a pretty good cross section of geography locations to study. I think I will make up address labels for all the hosts and that will make things a bit easier for everyone when mailing time comes. All of the hosts (except my DSis) are regulars at either RCTN or RCTQ so I'm not worried about sharing the addies. Of course, if someone doesn't want me to include their address, I will make sure that I don't. GeoBear is NOT a round stuffed bear. He's more like a dog toy and is fairly flat and floppy -- 8" x 4" and maybe 2" thick. He does have a roundish head but he & his journal fit nicely in a smallish padded mailing envelope so he should be easy to mail. I'm going to ask that each host try not to keep him more than a week or two. It can take several weeks for a small package to get from one country to another so half the time he is gone will be used up in the mail! I would really like for him to get to all of the hosts so that he has visited many different countries and states. Here is the list of folks who have volunteered: Joyce - Rep of South Africa; Di - Victoria, Australia; Mirjam - Israel; Claudia - Guadalajara, Spain; Kate - Great Britain; Roberta - Munich, Germany; Lena - Malmo, Sweden; Sheena - Nova Scotia, Canada; Dawne - Saskatchewan, Canada; Cheryl - Londonderry, NH; Lucille - Port St. Lucie, FL; Betsy - Austin, TX; Sue - no info yet. As you can see, GeoBear has his travels cut out for him and doesn't have a lot of time to see all of the wonderful things that will be available to him. VBS -- wouldn't it be nice to be able to go along on his world travels? Thanks again & CiaoMeow >^;;^<

I was a stop for a Geobear last year, last on the list. I found that others had added in little momentos of his stops, a miniature quilt, pins, souvenir stuff, etc. It was pretty fun! That little bear went with me to the courthouse and to the Pacific Ocean.

That's great My only worry about including stuff is that I don't want the postage to get to be too expensive for the International hosts. Raechel's GeoBear went first to her cousins in Santa Maria, CA. They took him camping and to the beach, etc. He's already been to several fun spots, that's for sure :-). CiaoMeow >^;;^<

Hi Tia and all,

I have just received an email that came with a warning:

"This web site at hisoftdream.com has been reported as an attack site and has been blocked based on your security preferences."

Tia, did you send information about UPS shipping services to those of us getting Geobear? Also, do you know this website? because it is the one that left the message above.

Cheers,

NO NO NO -- didn't come from me -- some **(&^&) spammer! Shipping GeoBear by UPS to international addys would be ridiculously $$$ I should think! The only thing I would ask is to send him air mail or he'll never make it to most of the volunteer hosts before having to return to Lizard Land!!! CiaoMeow >^;;^<

That site, hisoftdream is bad news. There was an email that had been sent to everybody in my email contact list saying it was from me with a link to that site that was actually buried with a legitimate site name with the one mentioned actually in the link. It wasn't from me and I didn't know anything about it until I got a reply for the email with a statement that the link was blocked. I tired and got the same thing. Someone was not so lucky, made it through and got a web page I had seen before where it says it is scanning your computer and has found X number of viruses with a legitimate looking looking address that mentioned their antivirus software. Get a popup saying to fix this, click here but doesn't give a choice to get out of it. 1st time I saw it, I shutoff my computer. Next time, I let it run and could not get rid of it. You click cancel and it goes right back to the original "fix" page. Clicked to download the software and once there, I could hit cancel and could cancel out of the web page. The people did not know this so went and downloaded the software for $68. I told him it was a scam to buy THEIR software. It created a dll file in programs/malware on their computer along with icons on their desktop for 4 "nudie" sites. I didn't check those but deleted the dll, the icons and checked their registry that didn't appear to have anything out of the ordinary. They are calling their credit card company and saying to not pay the bill. That "hisoftdream site and or the ip address of 212.150.164.80 is actually from Haifa Israel. Dont know if Israel would co operate with the FBI in getting these people.

Thanks for that Sunny, I have completely removed the email and any reference to it. Thank goodness I had a good antivirus program working.

I am in the process of advising my quilty friends and family about this website.
