OT great gift under $10

You know how it is at the LQS when you spy something on the 'reduced' table. It just jumps in your buggy and follows you home. Mine was a yard of Michael Miller glow in the dark sort of white cotton. I made a pillowcase with our 5 year-old great niece's name appliquéd in balloon letters on the hem. Before I shipped it off to 2,000 miles from here, I let DH play with it. Wrong. He inspected it with the lights on, with the lights off, with his hand over it while the lights were on. Timed it to see how long the glow would last. (Easy to entertain a great-granddaddy but difficult to get the pillowcase away from him.) We mailed the case and it has been happily received. Loved. Big fun. I need to mention that I enclosed the leftovers from making the pillowcase in the likely event that the Daddy there would also want to play with it. Daddy and 5 year-old were last seen making headbands with the scraps and doing Kung Fu poses. Next they plan to make masks and go out trick or treating or rob ATMs. Anyhow. For under $10 you can make a gift that is a winner. Now I'm wondering if the glow in the dark quilting thread has any sort of long life and entertainment value. Polly

There is glow in the dark embroidery on a quilt that I made in June

2007. It is still glowing strong. The baby's grandmother and her friends (very odd people) often close themselves in a closet or small bathroom to check it. Really!

You can't really see the glow but the quilt is cute.

LOL! Who would have thought a pillowcase would be such fun? I'll just bet all your relatives can't wait to get a gift from you.

Polly: I do hope you will make one of those glow in the dark pillow cases for Mr. Esther. He deserves his own! Pat

I was hoping that someone here had discovered a glow in the dark quilting thread that they could recommend. Is there one that really glows and holds up at least for a few washings? Polly

Polly, I would imagine that the dyes used for the thread and the fabric are about the same, so would hold up about the same. OTOH, the contrast of non-luminous thread on luminous fabric (if it can even be seen) might actually be preferable.

Or are you thinking about embroidery thread?

Polly, Superior Threads makes a glow in the dark thread that is guaranteed to hold up for at least a while. It may come in a couple of different colors too.... can't remember off the top of my head. I remember discussion of finding a table with a heavy, to-the- floor cloth to use to check out the "glow".

Thank you, Pati. I'll just have to play with some of that. If all of the weird people in our family have to go get in the closet to check it out that's going to be quite a crowd. Polly

LOL! I thought the weird people in families were supposed to come OUT of closets... Now we've gone from "Seven Minutes in Heaven" to "Seven Minutes in Polly's Closet to Check Out the Glow-Pillow"?

The REALLY bizarre thing is that it sounds like a chapter from OUR book...

"What a loooooooong strange trip it's been!"
