OT: Katrina's OTHER Victims

Hi Guys, I haven't seen anyone post about the poor animal babies who were left behind during the evacuation. I made a donation to one of the animal charities right after making a donation to a people charity. It was heart breaking to hear that people were not allowed to take their four legged family members with them during the evacuations :-(. I understand the health reasons for this but the mental and emotional repercussions are going to be horrible!! For those interested, here is a link to an ASPCA article on the search & rescue ops and the family reunion efforts being done in Austin, TX.

I told DH that if we were that situation, I would have loaded my babies onto a kid's wagon and we would have walked out of town. I would NOT leave my babies behind -- thank heavens we only have two kitties -- LOL. CiaoMeow >^;;^<

The animals are truly the forgotten victims. I spent all day Friday sewing as many of my "Critter Comfort" quilts as possible. One of the rescues I work with, contacted me that they were gathering supplies for the animal rescues and shelters that are trying to save as many pets as possible. I called people I knew that had things that were needed and even had a women give me $20.00 while I was in a pet store buying bowls and leashes. We also loaded up blankets, bowls, collars, toys, shampoo and other grooming items to be delivered to that area. We plan on doing another supply drop in the next couple of weeks and expect that many of the animals will be making their way up here to Michigan to find new homes as well. Please remember the animals. They don't get any help from the state or federal goverment, just from kind and caring people.

I see Noah's Wish hasn't had time to update the webpage, but, as you can see, they are there:

shelters floodedAnimal disaster-rescue organization Noah's Wish is operating out of Slidell,La. When Noah's Wish director Terri Crisp and her team arrived in Slidell onWednesday, the animal shelter was flooded with about 10 feet of water, rendering it unusable. A meeting with Slidell mayor Ben Morris produced alarge warehouse with a huge lot behind it for use as a temporary animalshelter.

"They're going to be able to have thousands of animals in this facility," says Patricia Jones, media coordinator for Noah's Wish. "They'll have cage spaces for cats and small dogs inside the warehouse and in the lot they're going to set up tents with chain-link dog runs for the larger dogs."

That much space will be essential as rescuers get on with the work of rounding up stray dogs and cats. Loose dogs are everywhere in Slidell, left behind when their owners evacuated.

Thankyou for thinking of these helpless victims. I have contributed to aid for both human and animal rescue and resettlement.

I know people have to come first - but when you can please think of those who give so much time and effort to try to save our animal companions. They will usually receive no govt assistance for their work.
