OT: Laptop Question

Gracious, John. Offence taken. Alabama is glorious in the summertime. We do have air-conditioning and antiperspirants. Polly

I have a Dell Inspiron and love it. I have not had any troubles with it.

Hey John

If you don't like the weather in the South, don't come. Schedule your "classes" in another area of the country that better suits your tastes and don't "give you the willies".

Can't help you with the Mac vs Windoze thing (this is a Linux household), but you might put out feelers with folks you know who work for large companies. We have a Dell laptop that we've had for a couple of years, a machine retired from a sales "fleet". Paid all of $100 for it, and it has worked well for us. Has survived a couple of fairly significant drops that I figured would have done in the hard disk... it didn't, but I did have to reseat a board. Whatever you do, keep the thing backed up and the OS secured.

Three months spent in Arkansas during the heat of summer, was my only experience of being in the South during the hot season. Strange scorpion/bugs came up out of the lawn and you couldn't go outside and ride a bike, or walk, between 9am and 10pm, without suffering heat prostration. No thanks. I will take my "southern exposure" in more temperate months, from here on out. Other than the heat, I liked being there. But, that is like asking Mrs Lincoln, "Other than that, Mrs Lincoln, how did you like the play".

John,

I've had a Dell Inspirion 6000 laptop for a few years now. I've had no problems with it what-so-ever. DH also has a dell "laptop"...it's a bit big for a laptop IMO. It was a new model, so there has been a couple bugs, but Dell has always been pretty helpful with fixing the problems.

Juli: Do you happen to know of a place on Peninsula that repairs eye glasses? The place on 17 closed. You are welcome to answer here or email me. Thank you so much!!

To the rest of the world: this is almost on topic because I use those eyeglasses to help me work on my quilts! LOL

I own a dell inspiron... Though I am in Canada and I think the models may be slightly different. It was an E something in the states and moved to an XPS I believe. I love it. Great gaming machine :) Of course it runs geneology software as well because my dad is obessed with geneology and sends it too me all the time. Anyhow the only issue I ever had with it was my own dang fault, and Dell was happy enough to send me replacement parts (my fault = my cost so they were quite cooperative lol) My dad and my brother also own the same computer as does my neighbor. Neighbor never had any issues at all, my dad's had some problem in the begining but Dell replaced it for free including shipping and a free laptop bag. My brothers has not had any issue. hth

Howdy!

"Windows or Mac. It's a Ford vs. Chevy" --- no, it's a jalopy vs. a new car under warranty, an Edsel vs. a Mercedes-Benz C-Class (dependable, relatively affordable).

Pttttooie: gotta' wash my mouth out for just saying "Windows".. ick! (*see also the discussion on Norton anti-V*, aka Computer Wrecker, here)

One more vote for Dell. I have a Dell Inspiron, several years old, and bought Dell again wehn I needed a laptop for work. Had a couple of glitches with the Inspiron but the tech support was great and so I had no hesitations about getting another one. (I like both the tech support by phone (note that the time of day that you call can make a difference) and online (they have very detailed instructions, etc. on their web site). And I would strongly agree with whoever has already mentioned to get XP instead of Vista. I am in Canada so not sure if that makes a difference re tech support or not but presumably the hardware is the same.

John, please, NEVER say, "but that shows you the lengths a Genealogist will go to." {Probably the same lengths a quilter will.....) Hope she finds a great laptop and has a great trip.

My favorite uncle who says he prefers to live in Tx. but has lived in Illinois for a long time, also says that after spending a few summers in "The South" he won't do that again! "I'm a weather wienie: I'm afraid I'll get boiled!" 8->

Altho' Tx. ain't "The South", we get the heat, too. And some of us get the humidity, as well. We handle it. I pray to the Gods of Air Conditioning; they also keep the quilt biz going.

R/Sandy - in beautiful (today) north Texas where it's getting a bit warm for me; windows & doors open, wind blowing like crazy! Perfect for quilting! ...or mowing the yard...

Hey I know about air conditioning and deodorant. I live in Ohio throughout the summer. Now that is as hot as I want it, and I don't even want it that hot. Remember I came here from 45 years in the SF Bay area in Calif. and you know by law they don't allow the humidity to go above 30% or they fine the weatherman who announces the fact.
