OT Lillies Warning

There was a sad article in our paper today. A lady lost her young cat due to it's eating a small piece of a lilly that was in a bouquet. Seems all lillies are extremely toxic to cats, causing complete kidney failure in a very short time, with no way to reverse it. The flower shops in this area are now posting a notice to this affect. They don't seem to have any adverse affects on dogs. With Easter not too far off, I thought I'd post this now

A couple of years ago dd brought home a kalanchoe plant the folks at work gave her for her birthday. Out Lily cat ate some of it over a couple of days and got pretty sick by the time I figured out what was going on. Thankfully the vet was able to medicate her for that and she was ok pretty quick. I felt terrible for her. It ws not cheap but we were lucky to learn a lesson without losing our furry friend. Thanks for the reminder Gen. Taria

Thanks for the reminder Gen. Even a small amount of the pollen picked up on a cat's fur and then ingested during washing can be fatal. I personally don't do cut flowers but I know many that do cut the stamens out as lilies open mainly to prevent pollen staining, but it also has the advantage of protecting our furry friends.

There was a case over here of a cat that became very sick each year when a neighbours outdoor lilies were blooming in the flower bed that the cat habitually sunbathed in. Again that was a pollen contact issue.
