OT - mostly - Anybody miss me?

I dropped off the planet for a few months, and just had to delete over

10,000 messages. Life just got overwhelming with work, getting DD done with the school year, and an eye injury that makes it difficult to work on the computer for any length of time and makes me need to be in a dark-ish room. Now that summer is here, I'm starting to catch up on things again. I missed you all so much! But I'll be checking in here and there. I"m going back to quilting this summer, too, because we've decided that having to drive DD to school every day was eating up too much time, and we're homeschooling now. Anyway....it's good to be back!

So good to see you again. We're glad your eye injury is healing nicely and welcome you home. I've never doubted that home-schooling would probably result in a better education - but what do you do about things home-schooled children miss such as getting along with all sorts of people, teamwork, and respect for authority even when the authority is an idiot? That sort of thing? Polly

It's generally not a problem, Polly, but so many people are concerned about that, and bring this subject up when I mention homeschooling. There are homeschool co-ops, lots of community groups, church, a family we are close with that has 9 kids at home (3 are grown and married), ballet classes, community (and even public school) sports teams, and a myrad other ways kids can be "socialized". Each state and even school district has rules about kids being able to attend part time just for the arts and/or sports. As homeschoolers, we can be so much more flexible and have many more field trips than a school could, so DD gets exposure to a lot of different kinds of people. It's honestly the least of a homeschooler's worries. I would much rather her have a firm foundation in how to behave properly, that when difficult situations come up, she can come to us for advice on how to deal with it, rather than being in a closed campus situation where there is bullying and sexual harrasment among the 5th graders going on (something we had to deal with this year). I was even more concerned about the parents than the kids this past year...just a lot of immaturity and apathy going around.

More than you ever wanted to know...but I wanted to be thorough, in case anyone else was wondering.

No, not too much information. Homeschooling is just something I didn't know anything about. It surely does make a lot of sense. In a small town nearby, 80 teachers quit at the end of this semester. Two of my sisters were school teachers and simply gave up. Both now work in Human Relations. They say going by the jail on Monday mornings to collect their errant employees is a picnic compared to dealing with the bureaucracy of the school system coupled with the indifference and absence of the parents. Good for you, Jenn. Go for it. Polly
