OT - Sad News from Sonja in Red Deer / RDquiltcats' daughter

Some here may already know this news, but if it was posted I must have missed it.

As those on the Directory would be aware, I try to send a e-card for everyone's birthday. The current Directory list is a little aged now (like me!) and I guess this was bound to happen sooner or later, but I received this reply to a recent card I sent. As Susan asked, I am forwarding it to the ng.

Thank you for the birthday card for my Mom. She would have liked it very much.

I know this is a difficult email but here goes...

My Mom Sonja Katzell died October 6 2006 after a quick cancer diagnosis. It was pancreatic cancer that had spread into her liver and had been left untreated before it was too late. She was diagnosed late August. She had tried to get diagnosed for two years but the cancer mimiced a lot of other digestive symptoms that she had in her life. She was

  1. She really liked the group and I havent been able to find the group or anyone in it to let you all know of her passing. She had a few online quilt groups and forums she frequented. I tried a few times to find RTCQ but came up with nothing.

She has many friends in Nursing and in Quilting that have made this time a little less painful with their love and support.

The RTCQ that got together and built the hug quilt that arrived shortly after Dad died in 2005 is beautiful.

We both opened that quilt and it was so great to show it off to everyone in her quilt guild and friends and family. I brought it for Mom into the hospital while Mom was sick and we showed it off to the nursing staff. A lot of the nursing staff are people she hired, worked with or went to school with. I use the quilt to cover up watching TV and cuddling... whenever I need to admire the work and read the names of the people who lovingly and generously gave their time and love to my Mom (and me) in her sadness. It continues to makes me smile to think there are people across the world that are touched by Mom and have been touched by Mom.

The QI enjoys the hug quilt too.

So to Michelle in NL, Candy Dempsey, Mary Newcomb, Julia in MN, Giselle in Indiana, Jalynne the Quilt Gypsy, Karen Johnson, Allyson in Guelph, Morag, Dianne in Florida, Sharon in Melbourne, Dianna Curtis, Pat in Virginia, Betty Norman, Musicmaker, Julie Levine, Bev in TX, Irene Scott, Julie Insley, Roberta Zollner, Terbear, Tania in CA, Michelle in IL, Butterfly, Donna E Munn, Karen Queen of the Squishies, Marlys Letts, Bonny in NJ, Lia Altschuler, Cappy Philips, Nancycog, Betty Norman, Allyson Amario, Michelle Pope, Polly in MS, Dr. Quilter, Pat on the hill, Linda Feldman, Judy Husman, Cindy Pucci, Liz MacDonald, Rhonda Alterson, Estelle in UK, Kim Welter, Susan Price, Betty Evans, Tina in Houston, Cyndi Yelton, Anne in CA, Debi Matlock, anyone I missed and to the rest of RTCQ thank you for putting blocks together, arranging, quilting, binding and sending your love to my Mom (and me).

The quilt was treasured by Mom and now me.

I love to read your names and where you are from. The quilt colours are beautiful and the arrangement of them makes your eye move around, and the blocks are so individual and special!

Please forward this email to the group to let them all know how wonderful they are and how much you all meant to Mom.

Thank you

Susan Katzell RDquiltcats' daughter

P.S. I'm doing okay. My two brothers are doing okay too.

My reply -

Susan

I was so sorry to read of your loss. Thankyou for letting me know and I will pass this email on to rctq (newsgroup "rec.crafts.textiles.quilting"). I was not part of the hug you received but have helped with others. It is always nice to hear how they have been received.

My condolences to you and your family, and I'm sorry if my card brought sad memories for you

Cheryl

What a special daughter she is to have taken the time to write back to you & to have listed everyone who contributed to her dad's HUG quilt. If only we had known Sonja was sick, no doubt, she too would have received a HUG from the group.

Thanks for passing the message on Cheryl. How sad. Her daughter sounds like a wonderful person!

How nice of Sonja to let us know about her mom, in what was obviously a difficult email for her to write. And thank YOU Cheryl for passing it on. I remember submitting the block for the hug quilt...it sure warms my heart to know I was a small part of something that made such a difference in someone's life, and continues to help Sonja's family.

I am new to this group. This message from Sonja's daughter made me cry and realize how wonderful people are and especially the ones in this group. I am so glad to belong to it. You added so much joy by making that quilt. Helen

How very sad to hear this; but what a touching message from Sonja's daughter. Had you not done this kind and 'cheery' thing, Cheryl, we might never have known. We may never know of all the lives that our Hugs touch, but how wonderful that it helped Sonja and now her daughter. Thanks Cheryl. . In message , CATS writes

Susan, your mum was a dear, dear woman, one of the many from RCTQ that I am privileged and honoured to be able to call Friend.. She will be sorely missed but will live on in your heart and ours.

I think Sonja's may have been my first time in participating in a Hug. I am so sorry to hear of her passing but glad to know our Hug is continuing to do its work.

Cheryl, thank you so much for passing along this news. So many of us get busy from time to time and sort of "disappear" from the list that it's hard to know what's going on with them. I had wondered where Sonja was, but I just assumed (stupidly!) that she'd come back when life was less busy.

I'm so sorry to hear of her death, and I hope that Susan and her brothers are coping as well as possible.

I feel really bad about this. I knew Sonja hadn't been well, but I wasn't aware she was that sick. We used to email once in awhile, but I got busy and didn't realize I hadn't heard from her. Time gets away from you.

Cindy - off to send notes to friends I haven't heard from lately.

Cheryl: Thank you for sending this on to the group. It is sad to hear of Sonja's passing, but heart warming to read the note from her daughter. It lets us know that Sonja was blessed with a loving and lovely family. I am glad to know that the Hug quilt brought our friendship to Sonja, and is now a comfort for Susan. PAT in Virginia
