OT: treadle sewing machine repair

Hi, It has been at least 5 years since my last post... I have been away learning to be a practical nurse... Totally off topic though ;) Here is my question: I bought a 1948 singer treadle sewing machine second hand. It is in perfect condition except for one little flaw. When the stitch is made, the thread from the bobbin doesn't catch the thread from the top to form a perminant stitch (it tends to bunch up under the plate near the bobbin). Is there anyone here who knows of a repair shop in Toronto that handles treadle sewing machines? happy stitching, Pamela

Pamela,

The most common cause of the needle failing to pick up the bobbin thread is that the needle is inserted wrong. Did you get a manual for your machine? The needle orientation will be listed.

FWIW, it's probably a rotary bobbin, which means it works exactly like an electric machine (except that the power source is different). Any repair shop should be able to work on it.

Ditto here. Singer needles have a longer shank than the ones made by Schmetz. Sure is cheaper to buy a new set of needles before I'd take it to be repaired.

Flutterby!!!!!! Hey gal!!! A little forewarning would have been nice!!! I'm packin' tonight for my quarterly trip down to Mayo tomorrow and Friday, for criminey chrismas!!!!! I leave at 4:30 tomorrow morning for two very full days. BUT, duty is duty so....okay, tonight's flavor choice of M&M's is - of course - MINT!!!!!! Welcome back Pamela!!!!! When I get back to the quilt frame I may pick your newly LPN'd brain for insights so be ready for a pop quiz in a couple of days!!! Wish me luck gang, I need some of that Mayo magic right now!
