My mother has a Singer model AM 455292 sewing macine which is in need of repair. We would appreciate it if anyone can recommend a reliable repair shop in the Beaverton-Tigard-west Portland, Oregon area.

I'm not from your area and perhaps someone who is will come forth and recommend a good repair shop. If not, get out your Yellow Pages and look up the numbers of some of the fabric stores in your area. Call them and ask if they can recommend a reliable service shop around your town.

That looks more like a serial number than a model number...
Yup - looks like a 1956 class 15 machine, one of 50,000 made in 1956! :) If you have the manual available, that should tell you exactly which model of type 15 it is. I have a 15-88, a treadle, but they also made them as hand cranks and with electric motors. Mine is on my web site (URL below), in the Sewing Machine gallery: does your mother's look similar?
If you want to try to fix it yourself, you need to identify the problem, and if a part is broken, take the part number off it. Don't start dismembering the poor thing until we know what the actual problem is!
