Pfaff bobbin winding problem

Hi folks,

I am asking this question on behalf of a kite building buddy on another forum we both belong to. I have also asked the same question on the 'We fix it' group but have had no replies yet so thought I would ask here too.

He has a Pfaff 1215 (very similar to the Pfaff 1222 apparently) that has developed a problem when winding bobbins. From what he says the bobbin goes around with no thread but as soon as it starts to wind on thread it stops turning.

My experience tells me that this is something simple and on most machines I have seen there is a rubber wheel that makes contact with the hand wheel in some way or another and that the wheels are prone to wearing down (just like tires on a car). His mechanism is different to the one on my Pfaff 1119 so I just want to check that my assumption is correct. Is this in fact the case on the 1215/1222 machines and if so does anyone have any tips/directions on how he goes about the repair? I have read online that certain Pfaff's had an unusual method for driving the bobbin winding spindle but I could be certain whether this applied to the 1215/1222 series or not.

I would look at it for him but he lives in the USA and I am in Canada and it's a bit far to travel for a 10 minute job ;-) .

Thanks for any help.

snipped,

Am assuming your friend is using the correct bobbins. Pfaff 1222's have an automatic bobbin winder feature which stops the unit when the machine senses the bobbin is full. There is a small lever next to the bobbin winder spindle which must be fully pressed against the empty bobbin before one starts to wind thread.

Check also to make sure thread from the spool is correctly passing from the spool through the thread retainer stud to the bobbin. Also make sure the sewing mechanism is disengaged (presser foot should be at it's highest point).

If all else fails try using a new bobbin.

Yup, the bobbin turns when empty but stops turning once it gets tension on it from the thread. If he holds his finger against the lever it will start winding again. My 1119 has a similar automatic bobbin winder feature but all that does is push the bobbin spindle away from the hand wheel thereby disengaging the drive when the bobbin is full. My guess is that the rubber wheel on the drive mechanism is worn and not applying enough pressure to defeat the tension in the thread when it tries to spool.

He's used this machine for a number of years so I guess he knows how to thread it.

Sorry, but if it is a fault with the drive mechanism a new bobbin will make no difference.

Thanks for your suggestions.

The 1215 has 2 common things that will cause that actually 3, the rubber ring may be worn, most likely and or the spring in the spindle that exerts downward pressure to the hand wheel. Sometimes if the top has been taken off and not positioned as far to the right as possible this can also happen

Thanks Ron, I will pass that info on.
