Embroidery Machine vs Serger

i have a Pfaff, but it is in storage in another state. i wanted to buy another machine and thought rather than buy a regular sewing machine, i should buy something i will use in conjunction with the Pfaff. i know the differences between an emboidery machine & a serger, but will either suffice as a regular sewing machine, putting in zippers, sewing garments cut from patterns, etc.???

There are sewing machines which do embroidery, and there are embroidery machines which also sew, but like many "multi-task" machines you have to decide which features are important to you, the pick the machine that has is strongest in the areas which match your criteria. Most sergers depending upon the model do blind hemming, lace insertions, rolled hems and some other stitches. Some sergers also have a feature which drops the blades so one can do regular sewing. Have also heard of sewers doing entire outfits on their sergers, again it depends on your criteria.

Can do a decent enough blind hem and over lock on my Pfaff but still am debating about getting a serger and embroidery machine. Thing to remember about having separate units is one can do various parts of a project/another project without tying up one machine and or having to change settings/threads/needles.

Point of all this palaver is one really needs to try out various sergers/embroider machines to see if one can do what one needs to do on them.

I agree, Candide..........and by the way, the combination sewing and embroidery machines are quite pricey........I would much prefer 2 machines, and the cost is nearly the same as the combo.

I love my serger........it is a 5 thread, which sews a beautiful chain stitch seam and overcasts all in one go........It was reasonable because I decided against the cover stitch. I can buy a whole passel of double needles for what that costs.

HTH............PS
