OT Update re; Fixing Tricia

Well, after a good solid cry in the shower and an attempt to locate a counselor in the area that insurance will pay for (I'm having a tougher time than I thought dealing with my grandfather's death and some other things) using the phone book -- I discovered an ad for a Merle Norman Cosmetic Studio and called.

I told the lady that I talked to that I was a make up idiot (I think that's how I worded it) and that I wanted to change that -- I didn't want to be clowned up but I wanted to be taught how to accentuate what I have. They do that -- I have an appt for 2 this afternoon. I will have hubby snap a picture when he is home for lunch and before I take him back to work so I can have the car. It will be the picture of what the lady gets to see when I walk in...I'm not gonna attempt to doll up or anything -- I have a freshly scrubbed with noxema face and damp hair

-- well wet now but will be damp by 2 if not fully dried (hairdryer has gone AWOL -- I think it was with my old workout bag and that's been placed somewhere in the abyss called my home -- another issue to work on, another day)

I know right where this place is in town but never realized it was a place that did things like make overs -- it looks like a pricey make up store but at this point, I don't care if there is a cost for the make up lesson/make over (I don't think there is based on the ad wording though).

Think I should take what make up I already have with me?????

Thank you so much for the ideas and suggestions....I'm still gonna be attempting to seek out a counselor -- I'd like to try that route before resuming medications (technically what I have no longer qualifies as PMS -- I have PMDD, which is like PMS on steroids. been off meds for about 10-11 months and I'd like to stay off longer and maybe, at some point, start a family without worrying about fetal side effects -- course, I gotta feel better about myself before starting a family, etc.)

So, do I take the make up with me???

Good luck! ("m a mostly lurker but have been following this thread)..Merle Norman, IMO, generally has knowledgeable people and good products. I went once (for about the same reason you're going, but I'm a lot older than you) Just wanted to say, don't feel pressured into buying the whole line of product they use on you. Some of the makeover ladies will do that. It is quite expensive if you try to buy everything at once. But you can still learn good colors for you, techniques, without buying anything at all. Or you might just want to buy a lipstick or something. The lady who did mine was *very* high-pressure for me to buy the whole skin-care AND cosmetic line. It was still a positive experience though. "I felt pretty." when I left there. And I did learn some techniques for middleaged ladies. I was still doing the same old things from when I was a teenager, and they definitely weren't working anymore. :-)

Good luck Tricia. Let us know how it works out.

Yes, I would go ahead and take all your makeup so they can see what you have.

Oh Tricia, This is one of the subjects I have a fascination with. I have been watching people, those people who always look like they are put together. The ones even in dirty clothes shoveling the barn look great. I have decided that it is grooming. Good grooming always shows. Another thing aside from makeup. I read several years ago that if there were more than just very few applicants for an executive position. The person in the ironed clothes got the position. No permanent press for job interviews. When you go to your makeover this afternoon, make sure she writes down all of the colors she is using. Maybe get a sample, that way when you can afford the line you will be able to get it. Maybe just one or two things a week. I wish you the best of luck.

Okay, I took the make up with me -- overall it wasn't helpful to have it there but it did help to have something to show when I was having a hard time expressing what I was trying to say about something (ie when trying to explain why I was looking to avoid sparkly/shimmery lip color

-- it is way too teenagy looking on me).

The gal I worked with was very nice, she didn't pressure on purchasing (I did mention early that I likely wouldn't be purchasing today because of needing to wear it a bit to insure I would break out in hives, etc.

-- her only "sale" after that was to let me know that MN fully takes returns if it doesn't work for customers). I had an enjoyable hour or so. I hadn't seen many of the responses to this thread by the time I had to leave the house to get DH back to campus after he picked me up so I could have the car. However --

When she would do one side of my face, I would ask her what she had done and when I indicated that I wanted to do the other side to make sure I could, she let me have at it and I didn't do half bad with her instruction on how she applied (pictures will be posted later -- I'm "sneaking" on DH's work computer and there isn't a port to upload the pics but he did take them already). I was set I wanted to know HOW to do and she was very willing to let me and I asked "dumb" questions but she answered them just fine.

I got a sheet with my colors and prices and such. We originally had a tinted moisturizer on but the skin near my eyes was so sensitive from my crying earlier that it stung and we had to take it off right away -- so we found a powder of sorts that works a bit (I still need to tweak my powder application but it is better than it was). I did make two purchases -- I was comfortable with the lip liner and color we settled on (a duel end thing) and I fell in love with the stuff we added to my eyebrows to make them not fade into my face (she agreed with me that plucking/waxing wasn't needed, that they are actually well handled as they are -- except I got a few dark ones that need to be individually taken out tonight or tomorrow).

The final verdict was: cover up applied to the blemishes and she also did around the inner part of my eye area which was blue/purple from my crying, a powder foundation (I'll still need to tweak my application of that), lip liner and color, a base eyeshadow, a color eye shadow (hazel), an eye liner (pine) -- no mascara, a light blusher., and the powder stuff to darken my brows. I think that was all. I went bolder on the lips because I feel comfortable applying most of that (and what difficulty I had with the liner on the top lip, she showed me a tip to come in from teh sides, not starting in the center valley).

I feel better about some of it -- I think I can recreate some of the look with some of the make up I currently own but other parts I will just not "do" that aspect until I can purchase the stuff that works for me.

The only cost was for the two items I purchased -- the make up lessons/make over itself was for free -- she said it would have been a different story if I had come in and just wanted make up done for a special event and made it clearn I did't want to hear about anything, just do my make up -- she says she charges for that type of thing but otherwise, it's free.

Okay, DH needs his work computer for work stuff -- imagine that! so I'll be going -- I'll get the pics up sometime tonight hopefully, if not, then probably tomrorow.

Thank you!

Howdy!

Yeah, what Roberta said. Cute, cute, cute, and lovely hair color. No more perms! (I only mentioned the coloring part because it's an easier on your hair treatment than perms; you don't need either, Tricia!). Btw, bangs pushed to the side make your face longer, this is good.

What others have said about an "interview outfit"-- more polished, a blouse that buttons a big higher and has more "structure" looks more professional; a jacket/blazer does, too, but it's forgivable to go without here when it's so danged hot! I have several pairs of black slacks that go with everything (I don't *do* navy). Slacks can be dressed up or down, good thing as I also don't own a dress or skirt. I feel like a mama: I'm so proud of you! You helped yourself, you look like you feel better, and it only goes Up from here. Cheers, Sweetie!
