OT: whoopie pies?

OK, I think that I have missed something here, but apparently the new craze here is American whoopie pies, both sweet and savoury.

Anybody ever made them? What are they like?

Do they normally have a savoury version or is this just France - they like savoury cake here, that really confuses my brain!!! Doesn't take a lot, but when someone offers me cake, I expect something sweet, not bacon and olive etc!

I've only seen two kinds of whoopie pies, chocolate with a thick vanilla cream middle, and pumpkin with a cream cheese filling. Either are really good.

I just find it strange when "new"food fashions occur and they say "traditional American" especially as DH is American and he had never heard of them :) They look like giant macaroons to me, maybe I'll try making a batch and see what they taste like.... Last year I bought what I thought was a very shallow muffin tin, but I wanted a new one and it was all that I could find here, and now I've searched around on the internet, I see that it is a whoopie pan and there was I thinking that the pan was wrong ;)

I read this and the directions for making these pies. They are like the purchased "Moon Pies" we can buy in SC, and in the southern states. They were always a special treat when I was small, and later on, I always got these for my son. My family never made these at home. About once a month I used to go to the garage with my father when he visited the owner, and I could get a Moon Pie and a RC Cola----Royal Crown. Barbara in SC

I live near Lancaster, PA, and there is a battle going on now between Pennsylvania and Maine. Both states are trying to claim that they are the "Whoopie Pie Capital"!!

Ooooh! Let us know how that one comes out. I wonder how they'll decide?
