I will be making matching burp pads to the baby quilts currently in progress. Some of the fabric from the quilt plus two layers of flannel.

When our first great-grandson arrived, I grabbed a sweet clean dishtowel to protect those soft little cheeks from my blouse. Bad mistake. I keep a few cinnamon sticks in my dishtowel drawer and they did Not smell like mama. He howled. Meanwhile, back to the question, I have some Minkee scraps here too. They would feel wonderful to baby but I don't know about absorbency. Only one way to tell. Anybody every burp a gator? Polly

Crazy thought, but what about those supposedly super absorbent Sham- Wow things? (NAYY) I see they're being carried in pet supply chains now for both messes and drying fur after a bath.

I would think if you are going to use batting cotton would be best. Not sure how absorbant minkee would be but it would sure be soft enough. So, how do you burp a gator? : ) Taria

This ends well. I used the measurement recommended here of 7" x 16". DH walked through so I tried one on his shoulder. He gave me the same wide-eyed deer in the headlights that we'd expect from Doc with his " I don't know nuthin' about barfing babies". There was an endless roll of good cotton batting in the scrap bin - cream petal something - so I used it for lining. Ah. Lovely. Not too bulky, should be absorbent and feels nice. I wasn't willing to make a career of stitching burp pads but I did use the hemming stitch: ___^___ (turned over) with the tension set on 6.5 to put a sweet scallop on the edges. So, so glad you mentioned burp pads. There's usually a lot of skinny flannel scraps here and I know we could have enjoyed a stack of them back when we were surviving new baby. Polly

we used a big diaper (nappy) folded to fit over the shoulder(thirds or fourths as i recall), then tossed it a separate from the bum diapers to soak then in with the rest of clothing laundry in the machine. the diapers all got washed separate from any other clothing. we had two kinds of diapers. those ones were double thickness to start so folded were more than enough to catch and absorb any spit up. worked ok for us. babys spit up, drunks barf. unless they're really unwell and projectile vomit. huuuuuuge difference tho, aint no mistake'n the two. j.
