Question on copyrights

I want to make a quilt of a photograph and want to make sure I don't infringe on any copyrights. Does anyone know how I can go about finding information on this? The photos are online and they appear to be photos of movie scenes. That seems to make it even more complicated since I'm sure that movies are copyrighted however the fact that these people have posted the pictures has me confused. What I'm wondering is if I make a quilt of a photo does the fact that it will now be a different medium make a difference?

Any ideas of where I can search for information on copyrighted information would really be appreciated.

Thanks for the help.

Are you making the quilt to sell, Shirley? Or just for your own pleasure and use? That would make a difference. There is an online site, I think, which sets out the law of copyright quite well. I have seen it quoted, but have never been there, as our copyright laws are different from yours. Try Googling? . In message , Shirley.Caylor writes

Are you going to show or sell the quilt, or is it just for your personal use? Are you going to reproduce the picture (ie print it on fabric) or interpret it in fabric? These factors can make a big difference Someone in the NG will have more local expertise than me on this issue but they will probably need at least this information to answer you..

It's not quite the same, but twice I have contacted artist's for permission to use a reproduction of their work in a quilt. Both times my request was granted with enthusiasm and they asked for pics of the finished quilt.

Just ask!

think it would be wise to contact the owner of the photgraphs no matterhow you intend to use the photos.

Usually if a picture is copy right protected you won't be able to copy it from the website. You'll get a notice that it is protected and you are unable to down load it.

It's really easy to get around that, and many people post pictures they have taken and not bothered or not known to do that.

If it isn't your picture, you need to ask permission.
