Question on HOW to wrap up

Hi there

Am very frustrated trying to wrap up my quilt. I have the quilt put together with batting between layers, I am trying to figure out if you sew right along the seams, following the pattern in the square, or if you leave a 1/4 inch seam all the way around. I tried also making a swirly pattern along the borders, but ended up taking all the stitches out (terrible job). I guess the quilting part is taking forever, and I am getting completely frustrated.

I am going to quilt along the seams I guess, so I can wrap this thing up some time in my life time, but does anyone out there know any good websites, or have any advise on the quilting stage of quilting. Especially the borders. How the heck do you stitch the border with out a pattern there to follow.

Thank you so much

Hang in there! Machine quilting is tricky particularly if you're doing something large. It takes practice and can be frustrating but it's such a happy thing when you get it.

try making a zig zag by measuring and sewing up and down between the dots that you making with your measuring. Boy, that doesn't sound specific enough, but if you take a 3" border and make a mark on both sides every 6", them make XXXXXXXXX it looks pretty good and is an easy border for a first timer.

I don't machine quilt so I was wondering, can you quilt the borders before you've quilted the inside? When I hand quilt, I work from the center out. Do you do the same when you machine quilt?

You know there are any number of markers you can use to draw your pattern on the border. They are made to be easily removed after your quilting is done. If that is what you are asking.

yup, inside to the outside when machine quilting as well. otherwise we 'might' end up with multiple puckers when we got to the middle and it was all bunched up, eeeeeek. nope doesnt bear thunk'n bout now does it. shudder, jeanne

Don't despair! The 1st time is always pretty rough. To answer all your questions: practice!

Stitching right next to seam lines is just fine. (Hand quilters often go

1/4" out from the seam to avoid all those layers of fabric.)

For the borders, you could just do parallel lines about an inch apart. (If you think it would look good.) Very simple. Got pictures? Roberta in D

Tips were great thanks so much. Have tried the pencils you suggested and they seem useless. Hardly make a line. Will search for better one and keep pattern simple.

Thanks!
