quilt repair for dummies- have at it or have someone else fix it?

Hey there!

I've got a pretty quilt that needs some repair.

My parents bought it 7 or 8 years ago in Amish country in western PA, where my family lives. I'm not sure how antique it is but it wasnt cheap (they paid $400)! Its been loved over the years- a little too loved- and after my dog destroyed it and it was left in a trunk for a few years until i begged to have it. Its very simple; all square patchwork, with no design. Mostly all different textile designs on each square, and all the same floral fabric on the other side.

I am an arts n crafty gal but i dont know anything about quilting. So the question is should I learn about quilting and have at it myself or should I take this to a pro quilter and have it repaired? I live in new york city and I can't imagine this type of thing being affordable (not much here is!)

Welcome! Hate to break this to you, but $400 for a bed-size quilt IS pretty cheap! How bad is the damage? Are all the squares damaged? If it's only a few holes, you could easily applique a duplicate square on top, then quilt through it. If the binding is worn through, remove the old binding and replace.

If you have sewing experience (or even if you don't), you might like quilting. Warning: Highly Addictive! Roberta in D

Oh yay, knowing that it was a relatively cheap quilt makes me a lot less nervous about repairing it myself. There's one hole in the center thats about 1 square foot in size, that goes all the way through, batting exposed. And there's scattered damage to the squares. The binding is in good shape.

Thanks for your help!

There is a quilt shop in New York City. The City Quilter. You might want to contact them for help with either having it repaired or repairing it your self. I "know" one of the owners through another list and they seem to be real friendly. Not sure of exactly where they are though. :(

But I am sure they would be able to give you some "hands on" type explanations and help.
