Quilt Shop Promotions

Being that I live at least 2 hours away from a quilt store and since most online stores don't have any special promotions that keep customers coming back, I was wondering what unique promotions your favorite quilt store has that keeps you coming back.

Besides the common discount cards--there are several ways to create different discount cards--and maybe seasonal sales, what else am I missing out on?

My favorite LQS, Quilter's Market and Bella Quiltworks, have promotions--but that isn't the reason I return to them several times a year. I can literally wallow in color, play with color, get good advice and good vibes from the staff, I am treated like someone special, and both shops have a wonderful selection of great fabric. When I want something specific, I will always go to those two shops first though they are clear across town. The nearer stores are okay, but they don't have the selection or the CS that the two above-mentioned shops provide.

And I think that online shops DO have special promotions. Check out some of the ones that have been mentioned in recent threads. I know I have had nothing but good experiences so far with eQuilter.

Fantastic sales at LQS and online shops seldom coincide with a comfortable surplus in my bank account.

When you have some online shopping time and are hunting for specials, you can always check out

, then click New, Shop News and Specials. Some of the shops announce what's new in fabrics and some tell about what's on sale. There's this, of course. 'Quiltshops' doesn't list all of our favorite stores and some shops reduce their prices from something too high to still too high. Of course, I would never encourage anyone to go shopping but if you are going to do it anyhow, there's a good place. Polly, who never, ever enables.

Marilyn,

There are no good quilt shops closer than 40 mins to me. I love to order from

They always have good prices and they always give a generous cut. They do not cut on the exact thread that would make a yard like I see so much in the shops around here. They also ship so quick I usually have my order in less than 72 hours.

So, what keeps me going back? Price, cut and service.

My LQS has specials like the one they are just starting. It will be once a month on Sat for 2 hours, for $5.00 you can fill a bag with scraps. The scraps will be large enough to make pieces. I am hoping for strips. We'll see what is there.

I attend a monthly "handwork time" at my LQS. You can work on any project you wish, as long as you work without a machine. We sit and sew and chat for a few hours. I've picked up many "tips" at these sessions and thoroughly enjoy the time with other quilters. There is no charge for this group and the topics of conversation have a broad range, sometimes even quilting ;-) It's a very friendly group as are all the employees of the shop!

Mine does no promotions at all, just a little discount card. I keep going back because I NEED fabric! Roberta in D

mine gives 3% of your past years spending - all you have to do is collect her hand written receipts (with stamp and siggie) and then hand them in once a year - it's not much but one year I got enough for nearly 5 meters of

**expensive** quilt fabric - I shudder to think of all the $$ I spent on fabric there!

that reminds me... when in usa/canada last year buying lots of fabrics, a few shops asked if i had my guild card for a discount. i showed them my guild pin on my visor and was never refused the discount. tho to be fair, considering how much i seemed to buy at every shop, i guess they thot it was worth it, lol. i also gave card points to anyone i was with at the time on my purchases. no one ever worried about that either. i reckon it pays to ask everytime cuz every little bit counts, lol. jeanne

And not trying to cause a problem here, but I somewhat resent the 'discount to Guild' promotions. I choose to be a lone quilter. No guilds; no sewing machine clubs. But I'm a good customer and a hefty spender.

Country Sampler (Omaha/Papillion NE) offers a fabric punch card. Quilted Moose (Gretna NE) has dropped theirs. Cosmic Cow (Lincoln NE) has one. Log Cabin (Omaha) used to have separate cards for books and fabrics. I haven't been there recently, but I'm guessing that was too complicated to last long.

i see your point. have you ever told the shop owners this? they might offer to give you the guild discount anyhow. if'n ya dont ask, you'll never know. :) no one asked to see my guild card just looked at my pin on my visor and gave me the discount. i'm sure they could tell i wasnt from around the area from my accent, lol. heck one i even told them it was my home town guild back in NZ and i still got the discount. ask if they give a guild discount, then explain your dilemma and see what happens. :) whatcha got to lose, eh. good luck, jeanne

I'd give all my business to store #2. I'd rather deal with a store that is willing to give all the local customers a chance at a discount than a store that is only going to reward a selected few for buying it's wares.

While it is nice that those who spend money to join a guild get a discount with the membership, I buy as much quilting materials as any other quilter. Debra in VA See my quilts at

To each her own! I am an active member of one guild, and a lazy member of another guild, so I am okay with using my card! I can understand your point of view (and Joan's) and must say it reflects the statement of the store owner.

I just resented the fact that I did not get the discount because of WHAT products I bought .... IMO, that is just another way to 'reward a selected few' for buying certain products. So, I will continue to buy the notions, and other non fabric supplies at the first LQS.

Sorry for the confusion. Our Benina store here does have BOM and classes and I juxtaposed that into a Sewing Machine Store Club. Runaway mind.
