Quilting anyone?

The design board here is filled with 30's repro 4-patches and they are just so dear. Gentle and happy. I've been playing in 'Nickel Quilts' by Pat Speth and Charlene Thode. Their manner of cutting and stitching are very good for people who can only stand so much repetition and then they go bonkers (me). Resting my eyes, I moved over here and came upon this email and thought I'd share the agony with you. ~~In a Purdue University classroom, they were discussing the qualifications to be President of the United States. It is pretty simple. The candidate must be a natural born citizen of at least 35 years of age. However, one girl in the class immediately started in on how unfair was the requirement to be a natural born citizen. In short, her opinion was that this requirement prevented many capable individuals from becoming president. The class was taking it in and letting her rant but many jaws hit the floor when she wrapped up her argument by stating, "What makes a natural born citizen any more qualified to lead this country than one born by C-section?" Yep, these are the same kind of 18-year-olds that vote in our elections! They breed and they walk among us...~~ Polly

ARRGGHHH! Can we hope it was a joke? Please?

My guild has had Pat Speth give a program. She only lives about 60 miles from here. I have no idea how many quilts she showed that night. One after the other, after the other....... After a while the scrappy 5" block variations all blended together. After a while I wanted to yell, "I get it! You can cut them up and put them together in many ways!! Uncle!!!" KJ

I showed this book and procedure to my quilting buddy. I said, " I like the concept but I HATE the quilts." Friend observed, "You just don't like the colors". She knows me too well. I must try harder to be unpredictable. Polly

I read the phrase the same way as that 18-year-old. It's the only normal meaning for the expression, and whatever other meaning it might have in American politics is bizarre and was just as bizarre a couple of hundred years ago.

Maybe somebody was too influenced by reading "Macbeth".

Awww, now, y'all. Easy there. It's just a joke. I don't know why the jokes lately seem to pick on Purdue. I don't even know where Purdue is. Polly

Not so bizarre, and not the only meaning.

Remember, the phrase and definition were written and used by men who were, for the most part, natural born English subjects.

O.E.D. defines "natural born" as "having a specified position or character by birth." and was likely the same a couple of hundred years ago. Discussions of the phrase, its meaning, and possible sources can be found in a number of places. One starting point (as it is notated) is:

He's 6 feet under. I heard his neck waddle got caught in a plucking machine - it was terrible!

oh boy; getting deeper and deeper.

Since when we studied the constitution in school the language was part of it, the joke works really well for me. I automatically think of "born in this country" because it's all wrapped up with the flowery language I learned like being endowed with inalienable rights. Then the punch line kicks me into today.

I wonder if the phrase "native born" would be any less confusing. KJ

I can't believe everyone is getting their panties in a knot over a joke.

Nobody's knotted, She. The heat wave may be getting to us. It is 110° here in the Swamp. Nothing showing of the gators except their noses. Polly

and even worse they seem to feel they are qualified to home-school! I cannot believe how many people proudly proclaim their home school skills and their posts show a definite lack of spelling and grammar skills (let's not even think about their thinking or reasoning ability). Yes, I think it is scary, very scary.
