Can I use size 20 quilting cotton thread in both the bobbin and the needle? If so, what kind of adjustments might I have to make to tension, stitch length, etc?
TIA,

What kind of machine do you have? Do you have the manual?
Do you have an extra bobbin case that you can play with?
Have you just tried doing it?

I usually MQ on the Phaff, and yes, I do have the manual. It's not nearly as informative as this group, on the whole. No, don't have an extra bobbin case, but I could fool with the one I have, I suppose, if I marked where it is now. No, I didn't "just try it", for fear I would make a huge mess, and I can't afford to take the Phaff in for service just now!

TerriLee, I have seen people use some mighty strange things in the bobbin. They were quilting upside-down, so to speak, so they could do some fancy embellishment with a thread too big to comfortably go through a SM needle. Yes, you can. Yes, you will probably have to adjust your bobbin case and again, yes, you will need to remember about where it was so you can set it back. Go for it. Polly

Terri Lee: Is that thread designated for HAND quilting? If so, you do NOT want to use it in your SM. I can't recall where or when I learned this, but I recall that using hand quilting thread in SM is a no-no. Reason is that the finish on that thread is not good for the tension disks. It is not good to use it in bobbin either. I remember that specifically. This could be a Pfaff specific issue, but I think it is a generic rule. HTH. Pfilomina Pfaff and I wish you happy quilting in Washington. Pat in Virginia
No, no, no. This is good Signature MQ thread, just a bit heavier than I normally use. But I got a great deal on a bunch of spools of variegated Size 20 cotton, so thought I would try it. It says right on it, "use a size 100/16 needle". I figured I'd use a topstitching needle, which is often what I use with a heavier thread. I'd just never tried it in the bobbin before. I'll make a practice sandwich, and see how it goes. Thanks bunches,

It will probably be fine in the bobbin, but unnecessary unless you want to do bobbin work (quilt from the back) or you want be see it on the back, you can use a regular cotton thread or a thread specifically made for using on the bobbin. You won't be able to get as much of the heavier thread on the bobbin, so you will be filling the bobbin more often than if you used a finer thread.
If it's to prevent the bobbin thread from showing on the top, remember that variegated thread will seldom be at the same spot on top and bottom, so the top and bottom will usually be different colors even though it is the same thread.
