my goodness, Elly, you picked some interesting blocks for February. i cant wait to see how they turn out in the various fabric choices of some folks here. iirc, B Dieges only leaves her block up for one month. so if anyone might want to make it at a later date best save it now for future reference. i love the 'crocus wreath block'. such simple shapes add up to such a delightful block. the 'beaded chain block is gonna be a doosy (sp?). i think if i was doing it, i'd use FOP for that one too...3D the curves rather than applique them down. i do love 3D stuff tho, so pay me no mind, lol. j.

I'm definitely only going to do three of the blocks because I'm already going to end up with more blocks than I need. I'll need to re-size the Red Cross block because it's only 10 inches and all my other blocks are 12. I'm going to do the Whirling Star 2, and probably the crocus appliqué rather than the hearts. One appliquéd block a month is more than enough for me!!!

I watched the latest episode of "The Quilt Show" (internet show - Ricky Tims and Alex Anderson - show available to paid members) and it featured Suzanne Marshall, who had some great appliqué techniques to share. I have rewatched it and hope to try some of her suggestions. She had a good method for making bias stems of any width and she showed how to do her method of "take away" appliqué, which she has written a book about. She also demonstrated very clearly how to get a sharp point on a leaf! (Well, at least, it worked for her!!!!)

Hi everyone, I forgot to point out that the first block "Red Cross" is only a 10" finish block. It was a new one from QC and looks so pretty in reds (my favourite colour and very valentine-ish) I just had to include it for this month. Here are my suggestions for making it up to 12" finish

Cut 1.5"wide x 10.5" (1"wide finish) wide strips for bordering this block including corner stones of 1.5" squares(1" finish) This will take the block up to 12".

Being a 5x5 grid (from memory) it would be difficult to take it up to

12" any other way unless it involved template making. If you have a quilt design program that can you can make your templates to do this please feel free to do so.

Hugs Elly

I would have loved to have seen that. I've read about take away appliqu=E9 but not sure how it's done. I've been trying the back basting method recently. It works for some things. But then I probably need a lot more practice at it. Also seen the Ami Simms method and got her book. She made it look so easy. Don't they all. In practice (not that I've done much of it) it was a lot harder. I recently tried reverse appliqu=E9 but abandoned that attempt in favour of hand piecing the article. I'd chosen the wrong block to practice on. To date my favourite method remains FP on the back of a piece of appliqu=E9. I will try the others again. Maybe I should do a BOM on the different methods of appliqu=E9 for us all to try... hmmmm???

cheers Elly- on nrth coast of scotland where it is sunny again today!!! and

50F!!! wow! this may be our summer...

That sounds a great idea Jeanne. 3D curves... mmmm. It was an interesting block and which ever way you do it the appliqué is an easy shape. I loved that crocus wreath block too. :-D there were so many to choose from this month. Now if I'd been in the right mood I would have done a snow drop. I had plenty ideas to choose from, including a Christmas card I got with a snowdrop on. But it wasn't happening for me this month.. A bit more sunshine is needed. >G<

Thanks for the rem> my goodness, Elly,

I'll probably put it into EQ then paper-piece it so that I don't have weird-sized templates.
