Rocha marine quilt picture

Hey! I have the top almost done, no borders as of yet. I can't make up my mind- Does the quilt need a flying geese border, or a HST border? I am prepared for both, but need another opinion before I start cutting. I can hear you, jeanne. Yeah, I thought I had my mind made up, too. But DH likes the lightening bolt effect with the HST, I have never done flying geese. Help! Toni

I think the half-square triangles, because you already have several patterns within the quilt that are using the HST pattern. Not quite sure what you mean by the lightning-bolt effect, but I presume you mean so that the dark/light of the squares are always in the same orientation? I am also very partial to flying geese, but my feeling would be towards the other one in this instance. . In message , Toni Schneidt writes

I like the HST idea for this one, Toni -- but it might depend on what color(s) you're planning to use, too.

I think the HST, but both would be great. I sure do like it!

Well, I had the neighbors hold up the quilt for a better pic, and the guy, who is ex-Air Force, said he liked the rail fence pattern using the red, white, and blue. So, now another to add to the decision pile, LOL Toni

What a lot of work! I agree with the others -- I think HST that pick up colors you've already used would look very nice.

I would go with the HST.

Howdy!

Here's another opinion to add to that pile... or some pile.

A plainer border, one color, a print that reads as a solid That quilt top is already so busy, makes the eye jump all over the place to try to focus on what's there, a border of a red print, or blue, or that darker color in the "z" patterns, would say, "I'm Finished w/ this top; it stops here." Red would echo the medallion in the center, bringing the plan full circle, the borders bring the eye back to the center.

Good luck!

Toni: I did not see any photos showing the options, so I'll go on my own imaging. The quilt is very busy. IMO, it might do nicely with a plain border now. Maybe a solid or almost solid red. OR:

3" red, 1" yellow, 3" red ... the USMC colors I think. PAT
