Sashing outside on-point blocks?

I think I could use "sashing my wrists" as the topic. Here's why:

Just laid out my top of Ohio star 8 1/2 inch blocks with 4 1/4 sashing and 4

1/4 inch connecting stars. I stop after 1/2 way done pinning to admire my work....and begin to see why I had a lot more connecting stars than I needed. I did not put the sashing all around the blocks on the outside. Should I have? then I could have put my extra stars in. Now having seen this, it screams at me--"Moron!" and really looks incomplete.

Any beginners out there--do what I did not--draw a complete picture!!!I drew one but didn't put in the sashing because it was too big a PITA. Besides ;-) I knew what I was doing!

Yeah, right.

Does sashing usually go around the outside blocks? Maybe I"m just being hypercritical. It's for a really good friend, so in any case I won't have to look at it, and it's sure as h*** too late now to fix!

Advice, pictures, sympathy as always much appreciated....

the outer sashing is optional you *could* add it but it's not required

may I suggest using the extra stars as part of an inner border?

You know, how you finish this quilt is directly related to how you are going to look at it when it is finished. If this happens to me I finish and everytime I look at it I think, "I wish I had added those other sashing strips". Or I look at it and think, "I am so glad I didn't do it the first way." I hate the idea that I might not ever like it. But you might think of something that will look even better than your first plan. Have fun, this can be a real challenge.
