Sharon Schamber's new site. Free stuff.

Hi all,

Just want to let you all know that the problems with the huge downloads for the free patterns is being looked at by the team at Sharon Schamber's new site. They have been in contact with me and I have the patterns - very nice too - and am now awaiting the tutorials.

Great communication from them.

I have downloaded the two patterns in the original package. They are very nice floral patterns that use Sharon's unique piecing techniques. They also have wonderful demonstrations and directions. I got a message today that the download has been redesigned to be easier to use by those with slower systems. Try to give them a little slack...they were made aware of the problem and have quickly moved to improve it. I'm pleased to have these two new patterns.....if you had purchased as similar one from Sharon, it would cost about $10. Thank you!

I had given up as beyond my capabilities, but in the end did manage to download them. I had difficulty working out how to save them so gave up and printed them instead. The Adobe screen was not the 'normal' one I get with a 'save to' button. I am pretty computer illiterate, and only know what I know!

The patterns were quite small, but there was no scale to say how much to enlarge them by. A colour picture of an end result would be helpful too.

I am looking forward to the tutorial if I can manage to download it!

Can you imagine paying for an 8 min phone call and in the middle of it the pattern burps and you LOSE the whole thing? No fair. Can you make those pics smaller? Can you give us options of NOT downloading that part of the pattern that has all the pics?

On my personal compie, I could NOT download the first option whatsoever. I tried the 2nd and it took me to a diff program (I have no clue what one as it was already on my compie) but I could choose which one(s) I wanted to download. I had a CHOICE which I assume most dial-ups do not. Just by the numbers given, I chose the 2 smallest ones and got the pattern and the materials needed downloads. When I have more time I will go to the last one and peruse it.

I do hope this helps somewhat as you can tell I'm no techie : )

I do appreciate what you are doing as I'm sure you will have a number of us visiting once you have the bugs worked out.

I enjoyed the separate video on the basket handle/celtic sewing as I've never seen it done that way before..(this was from the other options you gave us--not in the pattern download area---I'm thinking it was a separate post to our RCTQ group). Tell Sharon thanks for doing that for us.

Butterfly ( I have no advice as to "how" you presented this to us as if it is 'acceptable'....other than 'don't push it' as a saleable product...that's for the Marketplace URL. Asking us to help you work out the system is ok in "MY BOOK". I am not speaking for others)

I agree with you, Kathyl. The patterns are lovely, and the instructions on how to do them are very detailed and clear. I've taken classes from Sharon, and her patterns are usually $10 and up for the same thing. These are free! :)

Sandy,

If I recall corectly,Sharon was selling them for $15 each. I have about 3 more different ones that we I will have giving out before launch as a "Thank You". But they will have the great tutorials downsized to under 20megs for easier download.

Thank you all for your support. And keep an eye out middle of next week for a great speical offer with two patterns and a video tutorial as well.

I actually thought they were $15 when I wrote the note....but I thought it would be better to underestimate than to over state the price. I know I bought at least one after taking her class in Paducah this year. They are wonderful patterns. A very nice addition to my pattern library!

I signed up and got the free files, but can't print them. And a black and white line drawing just looks like a lot of work for questionable results.

This may be a free download, but not sure that it is usable. Sigh.

One of the hazards of the industry.

There is a tutorail for it as well. After I resize it tomorrow I will have it back up on the website and a newsletter will go out to all the members.

It is a great tutorial that will explain exactly how to construct the block.

Pati,

What part of Phoenix are you in? I am based out of Mesa and Sharon is in Payson.

In Australia our "fast" internet is not what the US calls fast, but I did finally manage to download from the original links.

I also just got the new links, and they are fine.

Thanks Neil. I have Sharon's books and DVDs and I love them.

Hey, come on everyone! They are trying something new, they are giving these away free and they are being really responsive to comments that have (in a couple of cases here) been less than constructive.

Everything in life does not have to happen at the speed of light, and they have already achieved much faster downloads in answer to your "comments". Cut a new venture a bit of slack! NAYY

Neil,

Can I make a couple of suggestions on ya'lls site? If you can help it, I wouldn't use Flash ... when you use Flash you run into compatibility issues and loading time issues. For those on dial-up waiting for Flash to load seems to take forever. I'm broadband and running at top speed, and even to me, it seemed to take a while.

For the compatibility issues, it might not be such a big deal - but anyone on Mac who's running a 10.2 or lower OS or an older version of Firefox, they're going to be sent in circles to find the right Flash player (which AFAIK is no longer even available).

Second, I'd change your launch page if you can - it kind of looks like the random page you get when you misspell a URL and end up at a domains-for-sell site. Maybe put on of her quilts on it? So people know right off the bat that it's a quilting site .... AND that she does such lovely, gorgeous work! :)

I hope I'm not too out of line with my suggestions ... but that's what I do for a living - I'm a graphic designer and web designer. And my key area of expertise is Human Factors - AKA making sure that things are user-friendly and accessible to the average person! :)

Much, much luck!! :)

I am in west Phoenix, just a half mile from the Glendale city limits. Sharon has actually dropped in on one of my groups' "camps" up in Payson, at Camp Lomona. (I wasn't able to attend that camp, but we all heard about it. )

I don't think anyone's being mean or un-constructive, Cheryl. I think they're outlining issues that they (Neil & Sharon) NEED to know about.

I mean, I actually do web site design and frankly, Neil's kind of lucky that he's getting the feedback - not so favorable or otherwise. Usually, when people encounter too big of downloads, faulty links, etc, they roll their eyes, vow never to visit that site again and move on. And often, they tell others not to bother in a forum where the site owner doesn't have the ability to respond - much less receive that feedback.

Neil, because of everyone's responses, now has valuable data that he can take to his web designer and use that to get a better, more effective site. And that means a better chance for profit/revenue.

Just my two cents ...

This is butterfly responding--piggybacking on your request to Pati : ) I'm in Fountain Hills, and we do most of our shopping in Mesa, if we can't get it here. Sometimes the store owners here will tell you where else you might go to get what you are looking for..seems Mesa wins 9 out of 10 times:) We're starting to learn our way around there.

Okay, Neil, I've never claimed to have a perfect memory. It may well have been $15 instead of $10 -- but the fact remains that they're terrific patterns and wonderful instructions, and these are *free*! :D

scroll down to "Compression and Backup" you'll find Winrar and Winzip (don't know anything about 7-Zip that's mentioned). I use Winrar but that's a personal preference. Wendy

Know how you feel, Mary.....if you're using XP, goto Start > Search > All files and Folders (I think from memory, I got stupid Vista) and do a search of your entire computer for two files, one called Pattern1.zip and the other Pattern2.zip and hopefully they will pop up. You should be able to see where the little sods have been hiding. It's possible they are in your My Document folder, if not I'd copy them to the Desktop until you find a more safe place for them.

Failing that, download them again but before you hit the OK, check to see where Windows is going to save them. Happy hunting

Wendy
