Singer 15 knockoff

So I took Scout [my Singer 15 knoockoff] down to the sewing machine guru. I thought the wiring and switch from foot pedal to motor needed to be replaced, as it had stopped running in Jan at the retreat. Today he tested it, ran just fine. Showed him the bare wire just downstream of the motor going to pedal. He told me he is not an electrician, cannot/will not replace that part of it, due to insurance purposes. Said the motor sounds a little strange also, and after fixing the wiring it was a possibility the motor would go too. His suggestion is to run it until it stops, the throw it away. Hey, I bought it for $8 on eBay, so I have my money's worth.

Anyone have any ideas? I cannot do the electric work myself.

At a minimum, wrap some electrical tape around the bare wire before using it. And make sure you don't have two bare wires touching. Beyond that, I can't offer any advice.
