Speaking of indigos

DH wants me to dye some fabric up for him using natural indigo.

Now I have done some experimentaion in the past, whenever he gets a natural substance(1) in that has a reputation for being a good dyestuff I take a scrap of muslin, soak it in a solution containing soda ash and urea, and then sprinkle the natural substance directly on the fabric and let it sit overnight. This is just to get an idea of how much special handling it would require to actually use should the need arise.

Well the need has arisen and I am flummoxed because he wants it done with silk. I can find all manner of instruction for dyeing cotton with indigo. Has anybody ever played with indigo and silk? If not I may have to take some noil scraps and start experimenting some more.

is doing indigo on silk. They have generic indigo instructions online, and want to sell you a book on all this things you can do with silk and natural dyes. Have you tried the Dyer's List? I haven't subscribed myself, but I understand those who hang out there are pretty heavily into dyeing. (And they do NOT tolerate off topic posts.)

I have indeed dyed silk with Indigo! It turns out a lot paler than cotton does although of course you just keep redipping it! The good thing about Indigo dyeing is it is "instant".It turns from a lovely green to turquoise and of course that gorgeous deep blue before your very eyes! Fasinating! Very smelly though. Needs to be done out of doors if at all possible!
