Started Anniversary quilt today

Gorgeous fabric. And I love the idea of giving him the blocks. I can't wait to see the blocks as they are finished and progress toward a full quilt.

Yes, August is soon! Just 60 days to make 40 blocks so that means about one a day. Today I made two and have time to finish one more before he comes home. Of course "Contrary Wife" is probably the easiest of the blocks. I drew and printed the patterns in EQ this week end. I am having fun writing the notes in my head. Those will probably take as long as making the blocks. Would be nice to have hand written notes but there is no spell checker for my handwriting. Today I am excited about the project. We will see how excited I am in three weeks. I am counting on my internet friends to keep me accountable.

Love those colors! It looks like something DH would like too. Gee, maybe if I started on it today, I might have it finished in time for our 40th (8-1/2 years!). Keep checking in - I'll be waiting for your updates.

I've been milling around something like this for my DW & self for a few months - next March will be our 25th-38th (depending on when you start counting from - we got "officially" married on an anniversary of the day we met, but we've been together as a couple since that first meeting...) I have a pretty good idea of what a memory quilt is/ should be, but admit I'm at a total loss as to what to do for our own or even where to begin.

Any thoughts/ideas on the subject would be appreciated. For the record, as a designer, I never copy anyone/anything directly, but as designers do, I borrow ideas for inspiration to develop my own.

A memory quilt would be anything that brings back those memories. It might be photographs or themed fabric or fabric purchased on a trip or in my case blocks names which sparks a memory. A friend just completed a quilt from Route 66 fabric to commemorate the trip she and her father took several years ago following the old Route 66 as much as possible from Chicago to California. They road bicycles the entire way! I made a quilt for my son to take to college made from novelty fabrics picturing his interests. It was a thrilling moment when I found that yo-yo fabric. Hunting novelty fabrics to fill a theme is half the fun of making that type of quilt.

I have made photo memory quilts for others but didn't want to look at myself everyday on my bed. The anniversary quilt is queen size and intended as our everyday bed quilt. Block names are rather fuzzy. Actually I usual think of them as a joke because the same block will have so many different names. I equate it to the sugar cook recipes I received from my mother which she called "Rosie's Sugar Cookies". I shared the recipe with my husband's family and now they all call it "Susan's Sugar Cookies". For the anniversary quilt I looked through several of the reference books such as Barbara Brackman's and chose blocks #1 I liked and #2 had a name I could equate with a moment in our time together.
