Terrible Choices

This may be the worst color/fabric choices ever made. 'My Dear Valentine' from QNM Jan '99 is up on the design board and it's right awful. The quilt is basically a ribbon bow atop a heart with flowers. I always loved the color combination of bright pink with pure red. The bow is a wonderful pink with some happy polka tiny dots of lime green. The heart is tomato red with wee little ants. Now that it's done and up there on the board, it is truly terrible. Somehow . . . the pink and red are so close together in value that they don't stand out one from the other. My choice for the red with ants looks much more like a picnic watermelon than a valentine heart. My hair always catches on fire when I see "charity" quilts that aren't fit to wipe muddy boots. This one isn't as bad as that but I surely did miss the boat with this one. Some sweet baby will love the dots and ants. Meanwhile, I think I'll just go bang my head on the wall for a while. @#$! Ah Polly, you make so many of these quilts for the little ones, that - every now and then - one of them isn't going to be quite as you had imagined/hoped. Could you go round the bow with satin stitch in, say, the lime green? . In message , Polly Esther writes

What a lovely idea, Patti. Yes, an edge of lime on the ribbon would separate the two. The last time I made a quilt that I graded as not very good, my sister chose it for her new grandson and carried it away. Beauty in the eye of the beholder, we would guess. Polly

I suspect that this isn't as bad as you think Polly. But it's just not what you expected. I agree that an extra splash of color might be just the spark you need to keep from banging your head against the wall. Slog on through and better luck on your next wonderful project. I have a feeling you get a lot more finished than you ever mention. Your babies are very lucky to have you.

Yes, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I think you are being much too hard on yourself. There is no color value placed on love and good intentions. Besides..... one out of every 20 'beholders' are born with some degree of color blindness (80% of these color blind 'beholders' are male). I think this fact may shed light upon the creative "I dressed myself!" combinations some children appear in. Considering the number of lovely quilts you make and the number of sweet, wee babies that are waiting for these quilts you're pretty darned likely to match the odds up perfectly. Somewhere a tiny child is going to be cozily cooing and yammering about the wonders of life with the iddy biddy ants on a quilt in delightful shades of gray....or with a bow satin stitched in lime green. Now go put some of that fragrant Tea Tree Oil on your bruised forehead...either way it all works out just fine! ;)

You nailed it, Val. This one certainly does look like "I dressed myself". Ah, me. What precious memories we have of that. Polly

"Val" Yes, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I think you are being much too

You're right. By the cold light of day, it's not 'that' bad - but aren't we glad I wasn't making a quilt with a hundred valentines that looked like watermelons? Now that would really have been a 'head banger'. Polly

Whew! I'm so glad the morning has brought a bit of relief from the head banging, Polly! Some baby is really going to love that quilt, no matter what you think -- and whoever is caring for that baby will love it for the time and effort and love you put into it.

I think Pat's idea of green satin stitching is inspired! I'm sure it's just the touch the quilt needs. :)

If it still 'Doesn't sit right' after a good night's sleep, grab a permanent colored pen and start scribbling. Can't tell you where or what color, but whatever you use, it will tone it down some...and you might just enjoy the scribbling part.
