Those Pesky Safety Features on the Iron

Or at least that's what I used to say. I also bemoaned the fact that "they just don't make 'em like they used to," when my circa 1973 Sears iron had to be replaced. Currently I have a Shark iron. It's okay, except I still griped because it turns itself off after being idle.

I'm not complaining anymore. I did such a boneheaded thing last night

-- forgot to turn the iron off and went to bed. During the night, the cat knocked it off the ironing board. It landed flat side down on the carpet.

This morning, there was of course a burned spot the perfect image of the iron. But the iron did what it was supposed to do, turned itself off. I am so grateful.

Man, what a scary experience and thank goodness this had a relatively happy ending. I am so glad for you that you and yours are all safe!

Okay then, Sherry, just for you and on behalf of all of my kitty-loving friends, I will willingly suffer the nuisance of my iron turning itself off. I have stomped and groaned many a time - but if it has saved you, then it's something I will bear graciously. Oh my, I am just so glad your iron did what it was supposed to do. Mine is a Conair and she heats back up very quickly. Polly

Yikes! What a disaster averted. Thank heavens!

My iron heats up pretty quickly, but I promise never to complain again about one that doesnt...

Wow, Sherry, what a stroke of luck! I also have an iron that turns off, but I've never really found it much of an inconvenience. I'd much rather have to turn it on (or shake it to do so ) than to try to remember whether it's off while I'm on my way to Timbuktu or somewhere. ;)

You know, that's really a pretty good idea. The extra red light on the power strip might catch my attention. (The black image of the iron burned into the carpet seems to catch everyone's attention -- oh, well; that's what those pretty little throw-rugs are for. It really disturbed me more than I let on -- I've always been *very* diligent about that. It's scary to find yourself being so careless.

I plug my iron into a 'top" outlet that goes with the room light - I'd have to leave the light on all night to leave the iron plugged in.
