Placemats

I belong to a Yahoo group of French-speaking quilters who had a BOM over the course of the past year. I had originally intended to use my 4" blocks at the background of a quilt I had in mind, but I stupidly used some fabrics that were just too strong for what I wanted; I discovered this fairly early on. :S

Anyway, when the BOM ended, I had a little stack of a dozen 4" blocks and no idea what to do with them. I also had a lovely toile that had been a gift a few years ago, and it suddenly occurred to me to use that with the blocks to make some placemats. They're finished now and ready for use in the fall. I've posted a couple of photos at .

They are beautiful, Sandy. Are they beigey tones up to dark brown - I wasn't quite sure from my monitor? I always thing it is a shame when a lovely pattern is covered up by the plate! So your use of the toile is great. . In message , Sandy writes

love the placemats, but what I love even more is the waterlily cushion, was a pattern or book used at the class? I rather fancy making one for myself.

Thanks, Anne. That was a project we did in my local group, and the instructor just gave us verbal instructions. I wish I'd written everything down, but I was just trying to "keep up". :S

Thanks, Pat. :) Yes, they're beige through taupe to dark brown. I know it's hard to tell whether our monitors are "telling the truth". ;) I was just desperate not to have these blocks turn into a UFO, and I'd recently finished that table runner. The mats don't really go with the runner, but that's what gave me the idea. Finished, as Ragmop says, is good. ;)

Lovely, Sandy. Elegant. It's wonderful how the black and wee bit of red is 'ahhhh, just right'. Polly

Hi Sandy, they're lovely.

Hadn't realised that there was a French speaking group, so have just signed up! Will tell the French ladies that I quilt with as well, because they are only just discovering the Internet!!!

Very nice! I wouldn't have thought of that, but it is an excellent use of the blocks.

Thanks, Janner. Which group did you sign up with? I was in one some time ago, but people in that one became a bit too immovable for my taste -- which is really saying something, since I'm fairly rigid myself. However, I found a second one that's very friendly and encouraging.

Thanks, Polly. :) The black is just a minor addition, as it's part of the dark brown print I used in the sashing and binding. I think that's why I liked that fabric so much -- the black seems to accent it just right. :)

Thanks, Deb. :) I was desperate .... ;)

Perfect! Isn't it great when you discover a use for blocks that you initially regarded as not quite up to par? Turns out they were just meant for something else. :-)

Exactly! They were no good at all for the original project, but they worked out for this one. :)

Those are very cool. I like working with 4" or 6" blocks!

Thanks, Ginger. :) I like smaller blocks, as opposed to 10" or up, too. :)

Beautiful! They look very classy! And they look as if you had carefully planned them just like that all along.
