Totally OT: 2000 miles of bad road

I haven't been here for a few days to read or post. Years ago, when we were young and full of energy, we restored collector cars...probably a good 10 or so of them. After awhile it got old and we sold them all. Now that my husband is 65 and retired, he wanted to get back into the 'gear head' business for a hobby. So, last Sunday night he found a 72 El Camino out in Colorado for sale on Craigslist. We live in Wisconsin....not a small trip away. To make a long story short, we left early Monday morning and drove our truck out to see it,

1000+ miles. Got there in two days, bought the El Camino, loaded it up on a car hauler, and drove home with it, another 1000+ miles.

I followed my husband in our truck, driving the thousand mile trip by myself...quite a feat for someone who had never gone over 50 miles before alone. I can't wait to get back to quilting once my fingers unbend from the death grip I had on the steering wheel! lol It's good to be home again. Donna

Well done Donna, that was a very long trip. Hope the car restores well. My daughter and her dad are restoring a Sandman Panel Van here in Australia. OH is doing most of it but it does look good so far.

Donna, the next time this happens, take a friend. Heck. Take an enemy. I wouldn't want to drive 1,000 miles by myself either. Nope. NoSiree. Not this chicken. Have they removed the steering wheel from your fingers yet? Polly

Hi Donna,

Sian's panel van is an HK (unsure of this model) 1976 Holden. My OH and I used to have one when we were first married. If you google as j* says, it shows what they look like. She also has a Holden Kingswood sedan which OH is doing some small repairs/maintenance while she is in the USA on holiday. This is a lovely car that has been looked after and actually had only one owner before Sian bought it.

I drove about 900 miles on my own last weekend. Part of it was on a county road that was 60 miles but took almost 2 hours. I had seen it on a map and thought it would be a good route to connect where I was and where I wanted to be. It was funky, hilly, narrow, and through absolutely gorgeous back country. Another part on the drive up was on a secondary road that led over three drawbridges. Not a problem except a very heavy rainstorm came up, and it was a narrow two lane road with big rigs. I think a passenger would have sworn off riding shotgun, ever again ;)

I was telling my husband about the panel van and he knew exactly what it was. I looked it up on Google images and they are really cool. Here is a link to the El Camino we just got in case you want to see what they look like. Thanks for all the replies. Believe me, if we could have found a friend to go with us, we would have, but they all had jobs to go to. Donna
