Turtle Quilt help, please

A friend has asked me to teach her to quilt. She wants to make a quilt in the shape of a turtle, not a quilt with turtle blocks, but the actual shape of a turtle. Does anyone have a link to a picture of a turtle shaped quilt? I can probably improvise if I could see one, or maybe there's a kit available somewhere.

I haven't had much time to sew or search the internet, my DH was recently diagnosed with cancer and we've been pretty busy with surgery and doctor appointments. The pathology reports came in last week and they think they got it all out. I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

I guess making a turtle is as good a way as any to jump back into quilting.

There are bunches of patterns for turtle things all over the place. Our Ash is fond of "turturlez". I imagine you could just expand a little turtle. I'll try and recall where I found the quilted turtle potholders, and the turtle kiddie rug. Worst comes to worst it wouldn't be all that difficult designwise. I made a turtle cake with the bottom pan of a triple tier set, the top pan for a head, and two more top tiers cut in half (to make semi-circles) for the flippers. I imagine you could do the same sort of circles in fabric. After the basic shape it is just a matter of figuring out what kind of personality your turtle has.

Thanks for the links. I'm not sure what I'm the most concerned with, teaching her to quilt, or designing a turtle. She'll be here tomorrow night for our first session, so I guess I'll know soon.

Thanks also for the good wishes for my DH. As with us, getting the girls "squished" once a year, it's important for the guys to get their PSA blood tests yearly. DH was up to date on his tests, had absolutely no symptoms, but still had prostate cancer. They removed it 3 weeks ago and the pathology reports are the best we could have hoped for, but it's still pretty scary. The doctors thought he was too young (58) for radiation and opted for surgery as the best long term (hopefully) cure.

In order for me to be able to spend long hours at the hospital, we had the critters boarded. Boy, was it lonely coming home to an empty, dark house every night. Don't want to that again soon.

If your DH has not had a PSA in the past year (over 40 years old) drag him, kicking and screaming, if you have to, to his doctor.

WOW! Great idea! I'm not Denise, but after looking at the "up-close" pic of the turtle -- all you'd have to do is make a large oval and attach a head, legs, & tail --- & maybe "birth" the quilt so you'd NOT have to sew on a binding.

It's actually done in two pieces. One is the body, sewn all around, clip curves, slit in the middle of the back on one side and turn it inside out, the shell is done the same way. The "waves" are snail trail blocks I'll be doing tonight in class. I'm really enjoying making my turtles. The first night after class I came home and made 5 more. I need turn three for tonights class and I'll have all 16 done. Next you stitch around only the shell. I'm using a blanket stitch.

Found it! This was in MAGIC QUILTS & PATCHWORK Magazine, from a 2004 edition. The magazine is French published, but in English, and printed in Italy, with a CT address. Go figure.

The pattern is by Dijanne Ceeval. I can't find it anywhere else on the web. It's actually pretty easy, and you can figure out your own way to make it. Let me know if you want more info.

Michele, that is truly cool! I love the way the log cabin blocks make the shell and the way the turtle's head and other appendages are floating free instead of confined within a border! I'd love to know how to make this one.

As soon as I read the first post I knew exactly which picture I wanted. It just took a bit of time to find the magazine. I think I got it as a freebie in Houston a few years back.

And it's not a log cabin block. Even easier.

Sandy - you've got mail.
