WAAYYY OT: Mouse in the Car Problem

Forgive the OT. I absolutely don't know who to ask this.

I've been ill, and been in the hospital a lot this month. My car had not been even started in weeks. Today I got in it for the first time, and decided to venture out to Wal Mart (ugh) by myself.

There is a mouse in there, and from the droppings (double-ugh)...it's been living there for a while. I just cannot stand the thought of setting a mousetrap, the poor little thing is just probably trying to get out of the frigid weather and trying to survive. OK, I know that's weird. But still.

Is there any way you know of to catch it live? Is this just too stupid to even ask?

I suppose I'll ask DH to deal with it when he gets home. Mouse-killing is definitely a "man-job" at our house. I cannot bring myself to kill hardly anything except fleas and ticks.

I thought, when I went to load my groceries, I'd "knock" on the trunk lid, so that if it was in there, it would scurry away and not startle me. I knocked a couple of times, then looked up, and some woman was watching and giving me the oddest look. I should have said "KIDS!! You still in there???"

We used to set live traps in the convience store I worked at... All of us employed complained about the traditional ones and the bodies they left behind :( Anyhow, the live traps lure the mouse in with food, and trap them there until you carry it to a suitable location and set it free. Mouse lives but in a nice new home away from yours lol

Sherry, I wish I could help but don't have any suggestions - except; perhaps you should stay out of the car until the critter is gone. Our niece totaled a car when Miss Mouse decided to come running across the dashboard of her car. It is a scary event. I guess that's probably not possible but at best perhaps you could have somebody ride 'shotgun' for you as protection. Polly

caught the mouse in my pantry -twice-I baited it with a piece of the ice cream cone that it had been eatingfrom the package in the pantry. I let it go outside and darn if it didn'tcome right back in! LOL Second time I caught it, we went for a longride to the park to release it. Mickie (who has 3 pet female mice that do NOT have the run of the house)

I found some had been eating vital pipes (rubber - hoses perhaps I should have called them?) in my car engine, when the engine system warning light kept coming on. They replaced it three times under guarantee, until one mechanic wrote in his report 'rodent damage' which equalled teeth marks on the edges of the pipe >gg<

I'm afraid I don't know any way other than the humane traps mentioned. However, we did install a rodent deterrent - infra red or some such, in the garage. No trouble since. . In message , Sherry writes

Just pray that it doesn't get into the fan box and die in there.

You don't even want to know why I know that's a baaaaad thing.

Yes, but you have to deal with the little bugger...ugh...I'd rather set a trap w/ peanut butter....and pick it up later in a plastic bag and dispose of it. I know where it is and it isn't coming back.

Survey time- how many of you throw away the dead mouse while it's till in the trap? I do! I'd rather buy more traps than mess with trying to 'empty' one. Yuck and ugh and GAG!

If I can't get DH to dispose of it (when he's out of town or something), that's *exactly* what I do, Leslie! Traps are cheap. Blech. The problem with mice is that where there is one, there are always more.

Heh. I'm ahead of you & Polly. I thought of that! Stuffed my pant legs down into my socks. I wouldn't care if it ran across my lap or something. But up my pants legs, no way!

Oooo. I'd throw the whole thing away, for sure. BTW, Leslie, do you know I have FIVE cats???? They're excellent QI's. Obviously they stink at rodent control.

One morning I walked into the kitchen and flipped on the light. There was a mouse on my countertop! I think the mouse was as shocked as I was. The little booger took a big jump, landed on my *bare* arm, ran down the length of my arm, leaped to the floor and disappeared. I can still feel those tiny claws scrambling along on my arm and it still creeps me out! UGH!!!!!

Since we have cats in the house we don't have mice coming in. We do have them in the bushes on our little hill. Ginger spends a lot of time with her head dug in trying to find them. The only ones I see are the dead ones that have gone in the pool for water and can't get out. They get a swift skim and a trip to the trash. The good thing about having mice around is that mice and rats don't live in the same area. I'd rather have mice any day! Either will ruin your car wiring if you give them a chance.

I'm too wimpy to do a durn thing about mice. When we were in the process of emptying/tidying our garage so we could convert it to a studio for me, we found a poor dead mouse. Poor little thing was stiff as a board. From that moment on, while I'm not a "mouse person," I could never, ever do a trap. Add to that the fact that we'll be bringing a mouse relative into the house this month - DS (10 yo) has asked for a guinea pig & accessories for this Christmas ... DS would kill me if I ever tried to use a trap!!

However, spiders are another story ... I stepped on one with bare feet a few weeks ago on the porch. Durn thing was the size of my thumb. And the bottom of my foot burned for DAYS. Spiders become a smear in my house. No exceptions.Yuk. Erk. Ugh

Regardless of my uselessness on this subject, I really do wish you the best of luck ... and do be very careful when you drive!!

Quilty hugs!! Connie :)

Can someone please explain to me why a human being , as tall and strong as we are , would be afraid of a tiny thing like a mouse or a spider?? that really is beyond me..i don't get that at all !

We had a SEVERE mouse infestation in the house a few years back... I swear Sugar Puff brought a preggy one home and let it go! They were field mice...

I used humane mouse traps that catch the critters alive. We took them out to the orchard to let them go. Sugar Puff caught a few and ate them, but Cornflake didn't bother!

Oh my, I would have wrecked the car for sure. But I did have to laugh when I got to the part about the kids in the trunk -- too cute. You have had lots of suggestions for getting rid of the mouse so hopefully the little critter has found a new home by now.
