Washing Corduroy

I'm out of work sick and using the times when I feel the best to wash and dry that fabric I got from my aunt. I started with the cord because that had the biggest pieces and I'm fairly sure what I want to do with it. I must admit that I've never seen so much fuzz in my life. I know it's just the nature of this fabric, but I may have to vacuum this stuff before sewing. It is a good thing I'm washing it though. I thought I had two different shades of pink, but after washing I found out it was four shades. I thought I had three different blues, but I have two blues and a lavender. I've also got one printed cord with a blue background to add to the mix.

I'm going to have to rootle in my stash a little. I seem to remember a bit of paisley print corduroy and wonder if that would work with the other fabrics.

(sounds of footsteps dwindling away, nothing for several minutes, then footsteps returning)

Well, I've had a quick rootle and didn't find the printed cord but I did find a whopping big piece in tan. I checked to see if it would work, and it goes perfectly with the blues and pinks. There may be enough to just use blues and tan for a quilt for DH, leaving me with pink and lavender. Not sure I'll like a pink and lavender quilt 'cause it sounds so Barbie colored, but DH does not want pink for himself. At any rate, Mom is coming over later with some muslin and we will ponder the quilt possibilities together. Debra in VA See my quilts at

Actually Blue/tan and pink/lavender sound really good.

Some scrappy bits of brown and navy could go with both and add some variation.

Well the main blue is often referred to as Yale blue, then I have some turquoise to add as a zinger. So mostly a dark blue and tan quilt with bits of bright turquoise through out. I might also work in some light denim-y colored cord.

Since so many people replied to my earlier thread about corduroy quilts being heavy and warm without batting, I've decided to just use muslin as a foundation. It will be pieced in large strips onto the muslin, then a binding added. Like one giant strip pieced block. I won't have to tie or quilt it since the sewing will hold the two layers together. Not that I would nag, mercy no, but for goodness sake, go seriously clean the filter on both your washer and dryer. Cranky Pants Polly

Did the drier several times. I didn't think about the washer though. I'll have to check the manual to see if there is one on the front loader. Thanks Polly. Debra in VA See my quilts at

I might have to do that, but it would mean going shopping for the green and I was trying to just use the stuff I already have. If I just go with what I have I might just use the quilt for picnics and such. A good green would make it fit into the livingroom color scheme all right. Debra in VA See my quilts at

I have lots of corduroy to eventually use up also. Has anyone ever done a "raggy-edge" square quilt with corduroy? I've done it with cotton and also with flannel, but was wondering if corduroy would ravel enough to look right. I thought I might use up my cord with scraps of flannel plaids for something rustic looking.

I believe it would ravel enough, Denise. What I'm not sure of is whether you could get it to quit. Some time ago, one of us mentioned that she had made a quilt that shed more than a highly motivated QI. (and for years and years.) Polly

I went to my stash looking for uglies for Polly and found some green and pink striped fabric about denim weight. I'll use that with the pink corduroy when I get around to that one.

I've gone in that room to raid the stash 4 times in the last 2 days. So far I have not found the fabrics I am looking for, but I always find something that will work even better. Fabrics that I didn't know existed. This is a little weird, like the stash is alive and breeding in there or something. Debra in VA See my quilts at

Oops, I completely lost my manners. Thank you for looking in your stash, Pat. Please forgive my lapse. I was distracted by the search for ugly fabrics to send to Polly, and the discovery that some really ugly yardage turns out lovely when cut down to a 6.5 inch block. Debra in VA See my quilts at
