What do you always take to retreats/classes

Hi

I'm trying to put together a list of things not to forget for retreat/classes.

Obviously sewing machine, cords, extensions, fabric, rulers, cutters, iron, ironing surface, design wall, thread, gadget box [what is in it] scissors, snips, notebook, pen pencils, marking tools, pins- straight and safety, digital camera.

But what else to you always take along?

I haven't taken a class since the beginners series I did last winter. So I'm hoping that the next time I do a class they'll give me a checklist, in case some of my supplies have migrated out of the tub.

I took my slippers, so I didn't have to sew in my wet winter boots, and I took a water bottle. I took my favourite thread snips because I don't really like using the thread cutters on sewing machines. I took some scraps to practice on. And next time, I'll probably bring a variety of chalk and washable markers, since they're easier to see than the pencil the teachers wanted us to use. We're not allowed to take magnetic pinholders to the store because of the electronic machines, so maybe next time I'd find something better to hold pins in.

Louise, in Kingston Ontario, waiting for my friend to come help me with pin-basting.

Whatever you take, for goodness sake put some identification on it. Those return address labels we are bombarded with covered with a strip of packing tape would do . . . or your initials dotted on with craft paint or Something! I would probably simply croak if my foot control or very favorite Ginghers went home with somebody else. While I doubt that there are many quilters at retreats wearing ski-masks and absconding with everybody's treasures, marking your precious tools is good. Polly

Thank you for asking this Sandi. I am taking my first class at the end of November while we are "over the pond" on both business and pleasure.

I have signed up for this:

A paper lunch bag and some tape. Tape the bag to the table to put in trash.

(For a minute there, it sounded like we were on Family Feud.)

I keep a list on my computer of the things I take to help me remember. It saves trying to figure out if I have everything every time I go. Of course, I update it when I remember something else that should go. (I do the same thing with a vacation list.)

To improve work space: lamp, seat cushion, two of those rubber mesh shelf liners or place mats ... one for under the SM to quiet it, one for under pedal to prevent slipping.

Creature comforts: chocolate, power bars, wine, sweat shirt, umbrella, baseball hat, more chocolate, coffee and tea to make in room.

Ott light, snacks, something to drink, cutting mat, extra blades for rotary cutter, screwdrivers (for sewing machine) as well as oil (if needed) and cleaning brush. Extra bobbins, and both fabric and paper scissors. Spray bottle for water??

Lizzy, if you are going to be taking the class there, let me know and I can lend you anything you might need and not want to bring. Hope we can manage a meet up while you are in town.

Extra batteries for the camera! Oh, and a little pin cushion-trash bag combo (this: ) so I can keep my area semi-tidy.

I have a similar list, but mine is on my Palm so I can take it with me easily.

Lizzy, I hope you have a wonderful time in your class. One of the owners, Val, is a former neighbor of mine from whom I bought my first Bernina, and I run into her every year at Quilt Camp and usually also in Houston. She's *so* nice -- please tell her hi from me. :)

Sandy - I couldn't get to the website to see what your pin cushion/trashbag combo looks like, but I've got one (same?) with a weighted pincushion that sits on the table and a bag hanging down... which I line with a plastic bag that our newspapers come in. It sure has been handy for me for quilt classes AND at home.... no stray thread snips to clean up!

Please holler and I'll try to be there also. Wouldn't that be neat... 2 meet-ups in one year RCTQ for us AZ gals.Fri, Sat or Sun are easiest for me.

Pati, Carolyn, Jeanbaby, and anyone else that I missed....we HAVE TO come up with a name for ourselves....like the Southern CA Gals did when Jeanbaby and I lived there.

Thanks for all the suggestions so far. I've also got some others of my own that may/may not have been mentioned.

I have a small tackle box that I've put all my hand stuff in, appliqué needles, scissor, threads, ruler, notebook amongst other things.

I've also got a larger one that will be machine sewing based. The idea is that you grab and go with which ever box is appropriate.

I also bought several years ago a colourful cutlery holder from Linen's 'n' Things that I have some of my smaller rulers, half square triangle, pencils, cutters in that can sit on top of my sewing space for easy reach when needed.

Keep the ideas coming, I know there's other stuff you take when not sewing in your own space.
