What do you do with an ugly quilt in progress?

I'd finish the top, then cut it apart and put it together in a scrappier way. Done it before; can't hurt.

I agree with others: this is NOT an ugly quilt! I've used that pattern many, many times and usually have an "ugh" feeling until I'm all done.

I can't tell you how much your encouragement is helping me with this! I will sew like I love it and hope it will transform itself in the end with with the quilting.

On another note, welcome Ruby. I'm 62 yr. old also and regret not starting quilting sooner too. We have lots to do in the next few years, don't we? lol This is a wonderful group of folks who will help you along the way, if you need it. I can't tell you how much I learned just by reading posts.

It's nice to meet you, Ruby! I am new to quilting and to this group -- I've been posting here a couple of months, I think. I have finished a satin-and-taffeta quilt top, a Welsh mini-quilt which I both machine- and hand-quilted, and a Tree Everlasting quilt-top which I am in the process of machine-quilting. I also have a calico Churn Dash quilt top in process, which I plan to both machine- and hand-quilt. I hope that makes sense!

I'm 52 and live on the Alabama Gulf Coast. There are a lot of wonderful people here, some of whom I am already privileged to call friends. The quilting resources here are unbelievable -- more expertise than you could ever get in one book and more than I sometimes can handle! There are people here who show in national shows and who have written books, as well as rank beginners like me. Enjoy!

LOL! I have a "Warm Wishes" quilt that is waiting to be bound right now. The colors were gorgeous and "worked" on the bolt. Once I started the piecing, the hatred set in. It has taken me about eight months to get to this point. I'm just going to bind it and give it to the intended recipient. Some of my friends think it is quite pretty and I hope that the recipient does too. I can't wait to be rid of it now :-) I'll get a picture of it to share with you. You will feel very good about your quilt, believe me!

Thank you for your encouragement. Again that is not an ugly quilt, it is quite beautiful. Hope you finish it. Sometimes just putting it on the floor, on a sheet and looking at it now and then for a few days changes one perceptions. The colours are lovely and compliment each other well. ruby

Bonjour Allison. That is the extent of my french I am afraid. I have visited Montreal a few times . Loved it. Montreal bagles are the best, that bakery with the large brick open ended oven. the name of the street escapes me at the moment. Ruby

Everyone has already said the things I'm thinking: it's not ugly, and someone is going to love it -- probably many someones!

We tend to use various sites for photo-sharing, individually (there isn't a group site as such). There is an RCTQ site which contains the links to many of our individual sites; but you will learn that I am absolutely terrible at remembering links or where to find them! I use Flickr - and so do several others. You can do it free, or pay a little to have unlimited space. If I can get it set up, so can anyone I would think. Others use Webshots - that used to be the most popular, but now it has intrusive ads, so some are moving photos to other places. If you Google for free photo-sharing sites, you should get a lot of 'hits'. Just choose the one that seems to suit you best. The tell us the link in a post on here - you can keep the link to your site with your signature if you would like to. . In message , Ruby writes

For those who have never tasted Montreal bagels - they are made with a special recipe and cooking process .....and are far better than anything that goes by the name of bagel anywhere else. No contest. :)

I don't think that quilt is "ugly" by any measure! Your colors coordinate very well imo.

That said, I have made quilts that just didn't "sing" to me. On one level I knew the quilt was pretty, but because it wasn't what I wanted, then it just wasn't working for me. I came to the conclusion that life was too short and I had too many UFOs to worry about finishing a quilt that wasn't giving me any satisfaction. The particular top I have in mind was a medallion, and I sold it on ebay.

If you find you can garner renewed interest, I'd finish it. If not, then perhaps what you've done so far would make a good baby quilt? Or a gift to another quilter who loves it?

yes St. Viateur . those are the ones. The best I have ever had. we can get them here as on of the stores imports them twice a week. They taste like home made. I find it is as much about texture as taste. Now my mouth is watering. LOL! There used to be a Greek resteraunt just down a few doors. not fancy but excellent food. don't know if it is still there. ruby

fresh baquettes are the best, specially from a bakery in paris. tho montreal is probly a close second if ya cant make it across the ditch. if ya dont for some realllllly strange reason finish it on the day it is baked, the next day makes great french toast with real maple syrup. drooling, j.
