What's stopping you??

In the discussion about templates, I've gotten a couple of emails from folks saying "I would never even consider a pattern that has curves." At about the same time, I found this amazingly beautiful pattern that I wanted for my summer bed quilt but the third paragraph in said this: "Cut 159 sets of A and B and 1100 pieces of each C and D." I swear, it said cut more than 1,000 of each of two LITTLE pieces and then sew them together. (This is for a queen sized quilt) I love that quilt but I will never consider a pattern that has hundreds, never mind thousands of pieces to cut and sew.

Got me to thinking, we've each got our stopping point, the deal breaker that keeps us from ever starting a quilt even if we love it.

So what's your deal breaker? I told you mine -- I'm scared of all the pieces to cut and just know I would never finish cutting, never mind putting them together.

Let's hear all the deal breakers. This should be fun. (BEG)

The deal-breaker for me is that I will never make a quilt where every block is the same. Don't get me wrong, I think those quilts are beautiful. However, the fun for me is seeing different fabrics play together. So even on my color controlled quilts, every block is different--only the background fabric is the same.

P.S. I love curved piece quilts--but I have to hand-piece them.

I haven't made many quilts with curves, but that doesn't stop me.

Any pattern with lots of little pieces stops me, both because I don't particularly want to cut out all those tiny pieces, and also because they don't seem as "soft" afterwards (possibly a psychological issue of mine). It just seems like all those extra seams detract from the softness.

Fear. I have the most beautiful quilts locked up tight in my mind. But when I try to translate them into sketches and fabric they never turn out quite the way I've pictured them. So, I have a bunch of UFOs that are disappointments. Don't get me wrong... I finish lots of quilts. But the really wonderful ones I design in my mind. And there they stay.

from replys i've read so far i wish i could somehow show curves and applique is not hard to do. curves can be done in 3D and there are so many ways to do applique at least one of those will work for most people. i wish were younger and stronger. i'd visit with each person long enough to see if i can help them figure it all out. i love both curves and applique. anything is possible with a little help from your friends. well with quilting anyhow. j.

Same deal-breaker here. Lots of tiny pieces intimidate me. And like Trixie, I have a psychological issue -- I have it in my head the quilt won't be as soft, and will be difficult to hand-quilt with so many seams so close together. But after seeing Roberta's beautiful teeny-tiny scrap quilts, I might have to reconsider. :-)

What's stopping me? Just all kinds of repetitious chores. They keep sending me bills - knowing full well that I am retired and don't want to be bothered. You vacuum the floors and wash the dishes and next week it all has to be done again. Everybody thinks you need to wear clothes. Clean clothes. Exercise. Sleeping. Eating. Friends. Enemies. Ringing telephones. Flossing, filling the hummingbird feeders, making pedicure appointments for the gators. The list is endless. What's stopping me? Lots. It's a wonder that I manage at all to quilt. And - to those of you who are 'working' mamas or caring for elderly loved ones or writing or teaching and sharing, I don't know how you manage at all. But! I salute you. God bless all of us who manage to make warm and wonderful quilts to hug and love others. In the beginning, God created. Somehow, some way, so do we. Polly

I just don't like it. I prefer paper piecing at the moment. What kind of piecing do you do? I haven't seen many photos of your work.

The first quilt I made was called the quilt from hell. It was one of the thousand piece type of quilts with diagonal 2" pieced squares. I worked for 3 weeks making those 2" squares out of diagonal pattern pieces. I had no idea how many pieces that I should make so I just kept making them. I finally realized that I probably had enough, and started making the quilt. Well, three additional quilts later, and numerous place mat sets of 4 and 8 units, I still have half a drawer full of 2" diagonal squares, and I now never open that drawer. Some day, hopefully long in the future, I will need to do something with 2" diagonal squares, and I will have the option of opening that drawer, and pulling out the ready made 2" squares, but until that day comes, that is the one thing that is a no go area for me in quilting.

ing telephones.

Some kind of funny business happend to me after I hit 50. The days don't have as many hours, and some days I accomplish so little, but I was busy all day. I swear I was. I marvel that I once had a real job, little kids, homework, Little League, etc. etc. I don't know how our younger ladies manage all they do. I salute them too. That's why I cringe everytime I hear about a woman 50+ having that embryo implant business to have a baby. It's an extremely bad idea, IMO. Maybe not for others, but it would be a disaster around here. :-)

Sherry, I always think the same thing about those older women who have babies via medical intervention. If I were to give birth at my point in life, the baby better be born in its 20s, capable, smart and with an intense work ethic, totally devoted to keeping my house and caring for everything so that I can sew and read and enjoy life. ;-)
