what would you do with....

I came into possession of 12 of the most beautiful batik squares ever. They're only 7.5" so I'm kind of limited. They are the red/ orange/yellow end of the visible spectrum. I figured I'd use black with them to really make them stand out but I'm torn on what pattern to use. I came up with this one:

But I think it may be too bland. Any ideas?

Red/Orange/Yellows -- makes me think of Oak leaves......

Maybe some kind of positive / negative kind of thing... get twice as many blocks out of your squares that way.

cut out your oak leaf pattern out of the center of your batik block and applique it on the black.

Also cut black oak leaves that would "fill the holes" in the center of your batik squares.

Then cut all your squares in half vertically and switch them up -- matching them with their mirror image block.

Does that make sense?

Have fun with them! I'm sure whatever you do they will make a gorgeous quilt!

Most 'arresting' design idea, Tamra. I do like Kate's idea - though you could perhaps use an easier leaf-shape than oak? It would also look good with a simple sort of ivy/maple leaf shape, and that might be easier for you to do. If you stick with something like you have shown, you might like to explore using a different 'line' (or lines?) than a single straight one

- separate or connected. You could then use the squares you have left over - from under the overlap - to make a 'corresponding' pattern? As you are limited with the amount, I would take extra time to find a design that really makes you sing. . In message , " snipped-for-privacy@aol.com" writes

nah --oak isn't hard.... just jump to your word processor -- insert a piece of clipart that you like.... and size it to your needs.

Clip art is your friend!

found a clip art and am willing to try a smaller version with other fabarics to see if I "can". If it works out, maybe I'll give the others a try.

Fingers crossed, Tamra

PS - I'd still prefer just letting Kate "show" me what she has in mind. :-)
