Wounded Warriors Quilt Update

I don't know if you remember that I was extremely upset last year regarding Wounded Warrior Quilts. The gal who was head of our philanthropy made a major fuss about funding us, about the size of the quilts, etc. Well, we got a new President in October, and along with that a new philanthropy chairperson. The President and the philanthropy chair could not understand by we were being kept on the outside looking in. President is now DEMANDING that funding for Wounded Warriors be put in the budget. Philanthropy has taken us under their wing and made sure we have supplies. Announcements are now made monthly reminding everyone to bring in blocks. To our surprise, Philanthropy was in their storage unit and found 25 quilt tops all ready to be sandwiched and quilted. They were marked at Wounded Warriors quilts, but never given to us. We have 4 quilters who take 1-2 quilts a month and quilt them on their long arms for us. Since I have the house on the market, making quilts has been put on the back burner so that I can keep everything nice and neat. I have a quilt here that is just beautiful that I am getting reading to apply the binding. Since today is Easter and no one will be showing my house (I think), I will be able to get the binding sewn on and then have hand work to do so that I can still feel I am helping and still be able to have my hands on a quilt.

Debbie: I remember that post ... I was astounded. It is good to hear the guild will be supporting the troops. I do hope your house sells soon. Pat in VA/USA

Debbi, I remember your message and was choked by it. How dare someone who is against war deprive our wounded of the comfort of a hug quilt? It still makes me want to wish a bird would fly up her hateful nose. Better yet, how about a gator? Polly

Hey Debbie

Sounds like the 60's and 70's all over again. The way the veterans were treated back then is being visited on the veterans of today.

Good for you all for bouncing those idiots out of the project.

Make those quilts and let the vets take them home YEA, I love that idea. Let them know they are loved and appreciated.

Without walking a mile in their shoes, you will never know just how much your simple act of kindness will go towards healing both body and mind of all the veterans that receive your Hugs.

ho is against war deprive our wounded of the comfort of a hug quilt?

I find this shocking too! I am someone who very much does NOT support the war but who DOES support the people fighting it!

That being said, I wonder if this wasn't so much about anti-war feelings as it was about looking down the nose at "crafts"? I turn 44 next week and grew-up with a mother who never hesitated to make fun of my "silly, waste of time" activity. During the 1970s (when I was in grade school), home ec and shop were pretty much eliminated from the school curriculum all over the US because they were perceived as being a time-waster, distracting kids from REAL studies. Clearly, the Wounded Warrior quilts were not perceived as being meaningful by the previous president or philantropy head!!!

Anyway, I'm glad to see that things are going better and the quilt tops will be quilted and given to the wounded soldiers!

Erin,

Since this is part of our quilt guild, it is not a matter of looking down noses at "crafts". It was a big political move within the group. Hopefully, the positive change we have found with this board will carry over to the board next year too.

Thanks for the clarification! Yes, it is a royal pain when people start throwing their weight around in a group. We recently had a bit of a revolt in my artist's group due to internal politics. :-(

Anyway, keep up the good work with the quilts!!!
