My quilty weekend

It really should say my quilty saturday. In June, Camp Pendleton Marine Base opened up a Wounded Warriors Center on base for those who have no place to go after getting out of the hospital, but still need rehabilitation following injuries in the war. Our guild made 30 quilts so that each bed would have a quilt on it. The woman in charge told us that the soldiers do not get to keep the quilts which I thought was totally ridiculous. Well, now that some of the Wounded Warriors are being released they really want to keep the quilts, so there were some ladies who said "hell yes they get to keep them, we will just make more." One gal on the board is super vocal about her feelings and other seem to cater to her. She is opposed to the war so we should not be making the quilts. By doing the Wounded Warrior quilts, philanthropy has noticed a drop in the number of quilts they receive and she want philanthropy to use their budget money for helping those she feels should have the quilts and not the warriors.

Needless to say, there are a lot of people who are against the war, but not against the soldiers and feel that they need to have the quilts to show that they are thought of and that we thank them for their sacrifice. One gal took on the chairmanship, but was told she would get no funding from the guild. We have had a zillion blocks donated, had a lot of fabric donated and there are women who are donating their time. We hope to get some of the long arm quilters to help donate some of their time too.

8 of us showed up at one of the LQS by my house and we set up machines and went to work. 3 gals spent the day putting the half square triangle blocks into 4 patches while 3 of us took finished blocks, laid them out and started sewing away. The chairman was busy helping all over the place and 1 gal had been down with the flu and didn't want to get too close to anyone so she did all of the pressing. We started at 10 AM and by 1:30 when we broke up, we had 2 quilt tops finished. They are now 12" blocks that were laid out 6 across and 7 down, so they are not tiny quilts. Felt so good getting so much accomplished in one afternoon. We will meet again on March 17 to do it again.

That is awesome! My newly married niece is living on base and her husband ships out next month. She said the people there have been really wonderful. You and your group are an example of that!

My newly married niece's husband is stationed there also. They don't live on the base but in an apartment very near. He just returned in September and thought he would be in US a year. Haven't heard if he will be sent back early. Another nephew is a chaplain. He has orders to go in May.
