Bob Woodruff's wife talked about quilt

I saw that too and would love to know more about where they came from! Do you think they are from the Quilts of Valor program? His wife did call it a quilt when she first mentioned it. Then later referred to it as a special blanket.

The quilt guild I belong to has been making quilts for the soldiers, and sending them where they are needed. Most of them have gone to the hospital in Germany and to Walter Reed. We are now sending some to Bergstrom. Her contacts tell her where the quilts are needed the most. It started out that we made little miniature quilts they carried with them, and then we expanded to the larger quilts. Several guilds in the DFW area have participated in this. The lady in our guild that started the Tribute to the Troops projects in the Dallas area received the Valley Forge Medal of Freedom for this section of the U. S. 2 years ago. She received a letter telling her that one of our quilts was given to Bob Woodruff.

Thank you, Susan, I needed to hear that. My 'soldier' quilt is finished and up on the design wall enjoying some love before being shipped. Meanwhile, DH, the Yorkie and several gators have all filed suit for neglect while I was quilting it. When Debbi said that someone didn't want to let the military take home their quilts because 'someone' was against the war, I knew I would just have to send a quilt. Usually, I'm easy-going but that bit of hate made me so angry my hair caught on fire. Polly

That's what I was told (and heard from news reports), Q of V is one of the programs from which injured soldiers receive a quilt almost immediately upon heading for the hospital. As Lee Woodruff said, many times the family members beg to go w/ their wounded soldier (and civilians), and she was told she couldn't go w/ her husband "but the blanket will be there." What an amazing story. Cement implants make for a hard head! Finally we have an "inside view" and some real numbers of wounded soldiers seeking help in Vet hospitals (most don't make The List of vets "officially" wounded in the past 4+ yrs.). To hear about the quilts showing up for the soldiers is touching; little things do make a big difference.

I have a best friend in Massachusett's and I am in Southern California. She and I both have TIVO and live for so many TV Shows!! I emailed her yesterday and said.. Bob Woodruff's return to TV and his story is supposed to be on tonight if you care to see it, make sure you set it up to TIVO. She replied something like.. I have so many shows already, I'll try to catch it LIVE, there is no where to record it. I myself set it to record/TIVO but, have been down with the flu all week and have not seen it yet. I woke up this morning to her emails going on and on about how good the show was and she had NO IDEA how bad it was in the VA System and such. I don't want to ruin it for anyone else that hasn't had time to watch it yet, so I won't say anymore. She also replied that her cousin that passed away this last weekend from cancer had his Obit in the local paper this morning, said that they had stated in leiu of flowers, to donate to charity. Her and her husband are going to find a local VA system to donate on her cousins behalf this week. Then I clicked into my RCTQ newsgroup this morning to catch up and find this post about Bob and his quilt. I am not only going to watch the show as soon as I get my son off to school this morning, I am going to do a quilt for soldiers now too and anyone with any info on who I contact to send it or who to write to in general, I would truly appreciate it. I have many war veterans in my family and close friend circle and would like to contribute too.

However......it could have also been from Soldiers Angels. They not only have the Blankets of Hope, but they also put together a bag of things the soldier would need - sweats to wear, toiletry items, etc (remember, most are transported with just what they happen to be wearing at the time).

Along the same lines.....

The chapter of the big Arizona quilt guild that I belong to has been doing a slightly different project for the last few years. We are making "red, white, and blue" quilts for the families of all Arizona service people killed in Iraq/Afghanistan. It took a while to find the contacts to get these quilts delivered to the families, but we feel it is just as important to support them, and let them know that people are aware of what they have lost as the injured "soldiers". These are not fancy quilts, usually 12 12" blocks with sashing and simple borders, quilted by one of our members that has a long arm or who can do really nice work on a "home" machine. Simple binding and a label that says something like "In honored memory of the sacrifice you made." with the year, and "Busy Bees Chapter, Arizona Quilters Guild"

It is a very emotional time when we get thank you notes from the families. Especially from the small children. This last month we received one with a check to use for more of the quilts. That was hard.

(We started this partly because of members with family in the military and there. As well as friends and others. )

Sorry to be somewhat maudlin.... But another way that some are giving in this effort in a more "local" way.

Today on the site, there's a box in the right-hand column for Top Headlines; one of these is "Video: ...Bob Woodruff..."; a pop-up box gives several options, the quilt comment being included in the first segment, "In an Instant" near the end of that 9 minutes. "quilt..made by volunteers..put them around their legs .. on the flight back".
