Yay!! Piecing away at hubby's birthday present....FINALLY!!

Ok, I have the magazine that I got the pattern from, but not with me right this minute. However, I had planned to make this last year. Anyway, it's a HUGE Mariner's Compass and right now, I'm on border #4 out of 7 or 8. I have the 2 sides done and have measured the other sides so that I can attach the corner blocks to them. I didn't think I would get anywhere near close to finishing the top by his birthday (5/21), but it looks like I might make it after all.

However, I *do* have a backup plan. When he first saw the center block, he thought that was all it was going to be and thought it would be a great wall-hanging for his office. So....I had the pattern templates decreased by 50% and I will work on getting a mini version made for him.

In the meantime, I finished the baby quilt for his coworker and will be taking it to the office this coming week since I have to go to Charlottesville for Tom's doctor appointment. With gas prices nearing $4 per gallon, I'm trying to combine as many errands as possible into a single trip, and the main office is only about 5 minutes away from the doctor's office. I'll also be stopping by JoAnns to get another storage container for my serger thread.

My family gave me an early Mother's Day by letting me have the entire day to sew and do whatever I wanted to get done. Most of the day was working on Ken's quilt, but I also found free patterns for different chemo hats and such and made a funky polka dotted beret with a rosette on it and a little diamond-like button in the middle of it. A friend of mine from my MOPS group is going through chemo right now, and we are all giving her hats or scarves at our last meeting on Monday.

Anyway, just thought you'd like an update...I finally have gotten back to working on quilty things

Good for you! Sounds wonderful. I like the idea of a smaller-scale matching wallhanging. Roberta in D

Go you, I'd love to see pictures, what are the borders? I made a huge mariners compass in February, 48 inches across, the intention is for quite a spacious feel to it and it should be the centre of a 64 inch central block, with a 6 inch wide strip of geese, followed by a plain border of the background fabric (so it looks like the geese are floating), but I ran out of steam whilst piecing the geese and the compass is still on the cutting table, with an ever increasing pile of things on top of it! 7 or 8 borders would drive me crazy!

I will be getting pictures done shortly of both the one I'm working on and the one that was in the magazine - definitely a difference in them..lol. I didn't like their color palette for where I was thinking this would actually go, so I changed it to fit our color scheme.

Anyway, it just feels good to be working on a quilt once again!! We have a craft morning with my MOPS group this Saturday, and I may just have to take the pieces and my machine there so that I can get it finished. It isn't a surprise as he has been watching me work on it, but if I can get the pieces cut for the smaller one, I will take that with me Saturday and try to whip that out.
