Christmas with the Pox !

The last week of school the nurse sent home a note saying that a student in Victoria's classroom had chicken pox. I hoenstly did not think anything of it because she has been exposed numerous times and did not get it. She had been a little under the weather the past couple of days....nothing major, just a little more tired, a slight sore throat, low fever at night. Well, you guessed it....she woke me up Christmas morning to see what Santa had brought...I took one look at her and said " Oh Tori, you have chicken pox". I must say she was a trooper...it did not dampen her Christmas at all. I was worried that we would not be able to visit family as planned...but we called them and they said come on over. She is being wonderful about the not itching thing....it was only unbearable when it was time for bed. Poor kid has them everywhere. Her arms and legs only have a few, but her tummy and back are covered, she has them on her head, in her ears, in her mouth, and other places as well. She still has not let me take a picture of her Poxyness yet..lol.

It isn't that she won't sit still, it is more that she is embarrased. She is almost 10 and does not find it cute to have spots all over...lol. I don't think she wants this memory preserved.

Thanks Sabrina, I will have to see if I can get out to get some. I was 3 when I had chicken pox , so I don't remember them at all. Poor Tori will never forget..lol.

Thank you Tabitha. I am more worried about infection than anything else right now.

Hope Victoria feels better soon. I used to use baking soda (cow on the box?) in my DH's bath that I gave him before bed and in the morning. Got rid of all the itches. You just have to have a picture of that though! Make her sit still for a moment, LOL!

Oh poor baby! You know I can still remember what that itching felt like and I was just five years old!! LOL Little liquid Benedryle helps that nightime itching. Also lets them sleep :-)

Azzy, did she happen to get the chicken pox vaccination when she was younger? DD had it and I am always wondering if she's going to get them. I guess I won't know if it works unless she never gets them. I was just curious:) Hope she gets to feeling better and a speedy recovery!

Shame Azzy! Hope the BIG ITCH stops soon :)) We always used Camomile lotion when I was a kid. I think it helps to stop any scarring aswell :)

OK MC......you keep saying your DH's g/f which we know you mean DS and now you have been giving DH baths....this is possible but I'm wondering if you mean DS here too. Hugs S

My kids had Chicken Pox before the vaccine came out. DD got an awful case of it....there are those that say you can only get them once...I know this to not be true since my niece had them 2x but then...our Pediatrician said that if they have a really mild case they CAN get them again. Haven't heard of this happening with the vaccine though. S

You are right of course, it is DS. I need to stop using those acronyms if I can't use the right one! If I keep this up I'll cause a real scandal one of these days!

Oh I hope she feels better soon Azzy! Sounds like she didn't let her get her down, though, which is great. Neither of mine have had chicken pox, but they've both had the vaccine, too. I'm just keeping my fingers crossed that they don't get it! I've heard calamine works great on chicken pox. There's also a Caladryl out that is a combination of calamine & benadryl. I wonder if that would help? Hope she gets to feeling better!

On our way back from family visits on Christmas night she was getting really itchy, so we stopped at the drug store. I grabbed the Caladryl because it is supposed to stop the itching....well it did nothing for her. She did not sleep at all. I called my sister yesterday morning and she told me to boil oatmeal with more water than needed. Then save the gooey white water. Let it cool, and then swab that on her. I did it and it got rid of the itches, plus it lasted for HOURS, and I don't have to worry about it being a chemical. I am one who does not like medicine that much and would rather use natural choices. I am so glad the oatmeal water worked. She took a long nap yesterday and slept through the night without an itch.

Peggy, that is what I thought with Victoria. When I was pregnant with her I was around alittle girls who had them. Then Victoria was exposed to them several times and nothing happened, so I was beginning to think that she could not get them. I thought that because I had had them already...that when I was exposed to them when pregnant that I had passed the immunity to her. Well, so much for my theory..LOL.

When I was expecting my son my two daughters came down with chickenpox. Year after year my son was exposed to them in school but never got them. I wondered if he had developed an inuterine immunity. He got them finally when his son came home with them in first grade. Peggy in NJ

Oh that's wonderful to hear! I'm glad you found something that will work, and on hand, too. :-) Here's hoping she'll bounce back from this soon.

My nephew has had the chicken pox 3 times. The first two times were very mild and over in a short time. The last time he got them full blown and was miserable. Unfortunately the shot doesn't completely protect you it just keeps them from being as bad. The poor kit was vaccinated and still got the hit with them.

Personally after just going through 6 weeks of the shingles I would have welcomed the chicken pox instead of just the virus.
