Machine stitching question

I think one of the challenges not too long ago was on the use of stitching. We've also talked a bit about types of sewing machines.

I've never tried this sewing machine technique, but want to try soon. Can someone explain the technique to make the ends secure & neat?

Last night I finished sewing a dress for my DD. While clipping loose ends, it occurred to me that a zig-zag stitch might be easily undone or you might end up with too many holes in the paper where the thread came undone. Do you glue the ends? I could understand if the ends were hidden under another piece of cardstock, but many of the examples I've seen shows the end of the stitch very clean & neat.

How do they do that??!

TIA

What I did was pull both of the threads to the back of the page and then secure them with a piece of tape. You could also pull them both to the back and tie a knot. Either way you would have a neat looking row of stitches on the front.
