question about my singer

I have a question re my singer. The model # is singer 6217C. It's a pretty old model, late 80's maybe? My mother received it for her birthday one year, used it for a while, then packed it up and stored it in the basement.

I've been using it for the past few weeks practicing my stitching, making a few simple projects, all of which have been made with a regular straight stitch or a zigzag stitch.

I've noticed that the machine is also capable of doing some decorative stitches as well, but have no idea how to get the machine to do them. (The manual is nowhere to be found =S) So I was hoping that someone here either has a similar machine, or has some knowledge about sewing machines and would know how to access them. =)

Thanks in advance!

here's a picture of the decorative stitches the machine is able to do:

Singer used to have some manuals online that you could download for free. Can't find those, maybe someone else will send a link. They do have your model that you can purchase.

Go to the scroll down list and look for 6217 with out the C. I don't have that machine, but you should be able to just select one of those stitches with out doing anything special. The stitch width lever (left most in picture 43) should effect the width of stitches 4 and up, so if it is set all the way to the left you might just get something that looks like a straight stitch. The only other clue I got from the photos, there is a red dot on the dial. Maybe the red dot must be lined up with the black dot on the machine to get the stitches that have red numbers? Just a thought.

Might I suggest you take it to a local machine retailer, give them a call first. Just tell them that someone gave you a machine with no instrustion and you would just like to know the basics, how to set it, my guess it will take all of 10 minutes and they will be happy to mark some points with a pottential customer when it needs servicing or you need supplies.

Looking at the machine, all those cursor work together, the one one the left should be the stitch width which you will set to max to get those other patterns (it will make those spikes longer or shorter __/__/__/__ )the second one is needle position, this will be important depending on the pattern you chose. This one is the pattern , I am guessing that you select the pattern and then move the needle position to either left middle or right depending on which you want. the nob is stitch lenght. it How long your stitch is (___ ___ ___ __ __ __ _ _ _ . . . ) yours has a special separate set of indications for the button hole ( it likely sets the needle position and direction as well) , I can't see what the little cursor on the left of the pattern selector is but I assume that the drawing on it is meant to be self explanatory, I am sure you can figure it out.

If you decide to test my assumptions on your own I suggest that you unplug the machine and turn the wheel by hand, that way if you set it wrong you will be able to stop before the needle hits the presser foot or the needle plate .

I picked up a machine just like this from a sale last year, for my neice..it came with the manual so let me see if I remember how it works...

Under the stitch pictures, is a white or red number (or letter? can't quite make it out..I'll assume it's a number...) =20

Decorative stitches utilize the zig zag capability so, first make sure the machine is set to zig zag (the knob all the way to the left).

Then slide the stitch selector under one of the stitches.

If what you selected is a stitch with a 'red' letter/number under it, I believe you have to move the dial so that the 'red dot' on it is in the

12:00 position (under the black dot on the machine, right above the dial).

If the stitch you selected has a white letter/number, I think all you have to do is set the stitch length for whatever lengths of the stitch you want.

You may need to play with it a bit but this is how I remember this type of machine works...good luck.
