New Here

Hi Tammy, and thank you for your welcome and suggestions. What is a 'brad'? What is it for? Ooops - bought some stickers - but not too many. Cute ones of bottles (celebration page?) and flowers (gardens). Yes, moderation in the beginning.

I'm going away shortly so will probably not get down to doing much immediately, but I'm sure having fun collecting all the stuff together.

Need some glue stuff, so off the big sale coming up at Michaels. Mmmn - coloured pens... More news and questions when I get going. All the best, Diana

Hi Linda, Thank you for your welcome. I'm from England but live in Canada now on the west (rain forest) coast in British Columbia. No children (nieces - could do some scrapbook pages for these two). We have pets instead -- two cavalier, King Charles spaniels, and one absent minded cat. I am 'at home' with a weedy garden - but as it rains so much here I am so happy to have discovered an indoor project. I don't know where I've 'been' but 'scrapbooking' has obviously been going for a while and I didn't know anything about it until about three weeks ago.

I'm going to England for a hol. very soon and hope to check out 'stuff' there. Is anyone here from England - any ideas?

Also, we visit Washington and Oregon quite often and I always visit a paper store if I can, but does anyone have any other suggestions of stores to visit for scrapbook items?

Bye4now, Diana

LOL If our house ever burns down I'll never recoup the money I've spent from the insurance company! I have sooo much, I have actually been restraining myself and trying to use what I have. That will work for a little while. I do it mostly because I am running out of room!

Hi I'm new here but not to scrapbooking I have been scrapbooking for seven years.

I love to buy kits that have all the little things you will need for some lay outs plus they all match.

It's great to get big packs of colored card stock.

To get some tools and learn how to use them I check out clubs that you can join or just buy the kit from the past and they also have all the peices you will need including brads, ribbons alpha stickers some have stamps. I hear that Scrap Jammies.com is a good one they have a monthly class in a box kits complete with instructions they will teach you new styles and design tricks and you don't have to join just look at there site for kits that could work with your pictures.

I bought a couple of magazines in the beginning, just remember that the only one you need to please is your self. Your pages don't have to look like the experts.

Working at your LSS is good because they will help you plus you can find what you need as you work on the page and used there tools. the LSS stores usually charge a small fee like $2.00 an hour or $5.00 for the whole day plus most will give you a 10% discount on all you buy while working at the store.

There is so much more I could say but ....

Hello Diana, I live in London and only started scrapbooking recently so I am not too sure on the shops in the UK, but this is what I found: there is much, much, much more available in the US and it is also a lot cheaper there. Often you would find that an item priced US$10 would cost £10-12, plus a lot of things are simply not available here at all. One thing that is virtually impossible to find here are value packs of anything (which seem to be widely available in the US). Also, I don't think there are any discount coupons available, which I gather are one of the best things about scrapbook supplies shopping in the US...

The most popular craft in the UK is cardmaking, with scrapbooking just beginning to catch on. There are people who have been cardmaking for years and only recently started scrapbooking, so the market is beginning to pick up but things are still very expensive. The most widely available scrapbooking brands here are Making Memories, K &Co, Papermania, with some non-chain stores selling other brands, such as papers by SEI or KI Memories. As an example, I recently visited a craft shop called Creative Pastimes, which was voted second best for papercrafts in the South East, and I could only find single papers by Bazzill, MM, SEI, KI Memories, AMM, Doodlebug, Basic Grey, K&Co and some layering blocks by DCVW...

There are only two craft chain stores in the UK, as far as I know: Hobbycraft, which carries some basic scrapbooking supplies (and also a lot of other crafts, from cross stitch to silk painting to model making) and there is also Lakeland, primarily mail order company which also carries some (but not many) scrapbooking supplies. You will find that independent craft stores are often located in barns on farms in the countryside. These shops often offer classes in anything papercraft-related. Also, these shops don't really have very good sales (last time I went was the biggest sale of the year and only very few things were actually reduced, and even then they were more expensive than in the US!) and I also noticed some items being sold well above the RRP! The situation is dire... But these shops are still worth visiting, especially for other papercrafts or crafting in general! However, there are a lot of online shops so you can find what you are looking for... eventually.

In fact, I have found that scrapbook supplies are so much better in America and my husband is stopping over in LA for two days on his way back from NZ especially to go scrapbook supplies shopping for me! I am compiling a loooooooooong shopping list!

I can recommend some great papercraft magazines in UK: Papercraft Inspirations, Scrapbook Inspiration, Creative Scrapbooking, The Scrapbook Magazine and others. There are some very talented scrapbook designers in the UK (alas I often find the products they use are not that easy to find here). I also recommend watching the QVC shopping channel in the UK on Tuesdays from 14:00-16:00 - Paper Crafting with Dawn Bibby (Dawn Bibby is the UK's 'cardmaking queen'). This would give you an idea of the trends in UK papercrafts. You can have a look here:

If you need more info, please let me know. If you tell me which part of the UK you are visiting, I can look through my magazines and find out about the shops in that area. Klara

Hello Klara, How kind of you to answer with so much detail. I'm going first to a very small place halfway between Oxford and Reading. My parents used to live in Wallingford area so in that vicinity. . . don't suppose there's much in this area. Then going to Kent (West Malling - definitely south east) to another tiny village - each place visiting my old schoolfriends. But may be able to get to London a couple of times if there is anything super duper to checkout. So will look out for Hobbycraft. Isn't there a big shopping centre somewhere near Dartford?

Good for your hubby going shopping for you! I'm sure mine would do the same - he's checking out Michaels flyers already for me and wondering if the dogs are going to have to move out to make way for all my 'stuff'. You will have so much fun when he brings your goodies home.

I did get some K&company things, which you mentioned - very nice indeed, all matching with stickers and yummy things. So, thanks for all the information and the links too which will check out very soon. Bye for now Diana

Thank you! Dave, A couple of questions about layouts... For a particular topic would it 'enough' to do one page or would two or more be more fun, or does it get too overwhelming to have *lots* of pages on the same topic. I have so many photographs, many will have to be culled - that won't be easy - but don't want to slog on and do too many on one topic. I'm sure there's no right or wrong answer I wonder how a person feels when selecting photos for one subject. Can't remember the other question now

"Misty" & "Buffer" are beautiful and "Twister" looks likes he owns the places. Lovely animals. Your bedspread/duvet is very nice too! I will be doing some layouts of "Hazel-rah" and "Pipkin" (names courtesy of Watership Down) our two cavalier, King Charles spaniels, very soon. Also, Willow the best little 'ratter' in town deserves a page or two.

People here are absolutely so amazingly enthusiastic and happy. Very glad I found this place. Bye for now, Diana
